Can I just fit a tow bar to the crossmember?

Safely that is?
I want to put a tow bar on the back of my 109, not for towing on the road more for recovery off road.
Is a cross member stong enough on its own with just 2 bolts to take the load or should I have a drop plate with supports going back to the chassis?
(I don't really want to lose the ground clearance)

allways did, the army tow hitch went straight on the rear crossmember, as long as its not rusty of course

Load spreading plate needed on inside of crossmember to prevent bolts pulling through.
