Can anyone help me diagnose a problem?

Good morning all, I am new to this forum, I live on a small holding with my partner, two dogs and various ducks, chickens and geese in south Norfolk near Diss on the edge of a beautiful Fen. A couple of years ago we joined the Landy club and we bought a TD5 from a neighbour who was a passionate owner. Not being terribly mechanically minded ourselves we have really enjoyed being owners but have recently hit a tricky problem and I wondered if anyone can help... the car has an intermittent fault whereby it wont start. We put the key in the ignition and all the lights are on, turn the key in the barrel and it just clicks, we do this several ( sometimes 10's of times) and eventually it starts and sometimes it doesnt - invariably it doesnt when we have just filled up at the petrol station. We have had the factory fitted immobiliser re-programmed and we have changed the battery. The local garage said they dont think its a mechanical fault but electrical - but they dont do electrics.... any ideas? Thanks heaps in advance

Hello

Welcome to the Loonyzone.

First is it a Disco or Defender,

Secondly, does the click come form in the engine bay down by the drivers feet?

If yes, then sounds like the starter solenoid contacts, not a difficult job , parts are approx £13. But the top nut on the starter is a PITA if you go about it wrong.

Cheers

If it is the starter solenoid, then this is the kit I used.

A bit of info for you if this is the cause.

The trick I found with the top nut is to use the shortest and smallest dia (15mm iirc) socket using a 1/4 drive and an approx 6 to 8 inch extension. Undo it from underneath.
You do not need to remove the nut from the starter motor completely until the bottom ones are off, then you can undo it and slide the starter motor out at the same time.

Cheers

Thanks Neilly, really appreciate the help, Its a defender and I dont think the noise comes from the engine bay its seems to be more of a click from ignition unit? Does that make sense?

OK,

Was hoping for a nice easy fix......LOL.

Unfortunately the defender system on a Td5 is not something I have ever played with.

You may be better placing the question in the 90 /110 section as it may get seen more.

Good Luck.

Cheers
