I have a fairly reliable and endless supply of Avtur available to me, my question is can I run a Td5 Defender on this? Would I have to add anything to it? Is there a risk of damage to the engine?
Cheers.

Avtur, or as I used to know it, F34, is a rough variant of Kerosene which 'should' run your diesel engine though I would tread carefully. One thing is for sure, your EGR valve will be nice and clean afterwards.

yes although it lacks the lubricating properties of diesel so excessive engine wear although this can be countered with additives (2 stroke oil) or mixing with diesel but even so you may get in trouble if caught running it as they would treat it like your running red diesel someone correct me if im wrong?

EGR valve is blanked, so not an issue. And I live in NZ, so there is no red diesel!
The jury seems to be out on this, some say no outright, others say yes with the addition of some form of lube.
I might trial a 50/50 mix of avtur and diesel, see how she runs.

I go to the petrol station about twice per year to keep the chain saw and disk cutter running...

The above hints at an interest in alternative fuels.

I can say that i would not run kerosene even if it were legal where i lived.

thats just weakening the diesel, in a std diesel engine kero buggers the injection pump and injectors, some do mix 2 stoke oil to add a lube, td5 doesnt have an injection pump it has extremely high pressure unit injectors

I would strongly advise against it!
As James Martin has said, it can/will ruin your injectors.
Secondly, a mate of mine, in the UK, also had an unlimited supply of AVTUR, probably same source as yours, de-fuelled aircraft, he mixed it 50/50 with diesel, both his diesel cars blew up after about 3 months of that.
Also whenever I was following him you could smell it very clearly, like being downwind of an airport.
Fuel is so cheap now its just not worth the risk.
Plus the authorities will probably take an interest!
