Anyone know how to fit a scott single leaf stabiliser ? I got one with the van when I bought it but never fitted it.Last year going to Cornwall I had some scarry moments when large vehicles overtook me :eek: so thought it was about time I fitted it.
 
How many bits came with it?

There's:-

A block that bolts to the side of the caravan chassis that the leaf slides along - should already be fitted if the previous owner used it.

The stabilizer itself.

A drop plate that fits between your tow ball and the flange of the tow bar. thos has a bit that the lug opposite the spring slides into - it's retained by a thumb screw.

If any bits are missing try your local caravan dealer.

Think Ive got all the bits you say.I thought the leaf was spring loaded but it seems its just held by friction of the plates on turntable.My method would be to fix everything in place then push the leaf round until it locates in the bracket on the caravan drawbar.Sound about right ?

Yep.SHould move with the corners etc.Careful when taking it off, its perfect height for whacking yer shins!
 
The leaf damps the vertical oscilations, the friction linings damp the sway from side to side. They are made from multiplate clutch material or similar.

There used to be an article on the web somehere about servicing and testing these.

Fair comment about shin bashing - done that a few times!!!!!!

Some makes had a lever to reduce the load on the friction discs when fitting.

And you need to keep your balls clean to use them correctly, so a bit of faffing about is necessary when you also green-lane or off-road ... ;)
 
If towing a twin axle may I be so bold to recommend a Dixon Bate Shocklink. Not cheap, but smooths out the bounce from twin axle 'vans and reduces stress on the A frame. Other advantage is the ball and link is removable (easily) so vary easy to keep your balls in tip top condition. :rolleyes:
 
I think Ive sorted it now.It was easier than I thought.I got a couple of new friction pads for it and got it nice and tight.Hopefully no more brown trouser moments :eek: Thanks zzr for the link and to all who gave advice.
