Calling all Disco II owners with sls

Just in the sense of a word of warning, all Disco II owners with sls might care to read this:

It's been really cold here for about 10 days with plenty of snow and I was out the other day in my TD5 enjoying it's abilities when the sls warning light popped up on the dashboard. I stopped when safe to do so, turned the key off and then restarted the engine and the light went out, thought no more about it.

Went out yesterday, still loads of snow and the light came on again after a couple of miles. I checked and the drivers side rear suspension was lower than the nearside.

Leaking airbag you might think but it hadn't happened before so I had a VERY quick look underneath and both ride height sensors are covered in blocks of ice, so of course they can't work properly.

The weather is such that I can't work on the car (no garage yet) so she is staying like she is.

My guess is that the ride height sensors are giving duff or no info. to the control system so the compressor (which might also be frozen up of course!!) is not pumping the drivers side rear suspension back up.
I'm waiting for milder weather and will report back.

If needed LRseries quote £28 for genuine LR ride height sensors and Paddocks have Dunlop airbags for £63+vat. I don't want to think about compressors !!!!!!!!

I will pay more attention in the future to keeping these items really clean.

not seen what a ride height sensor is like i cant fully comment, but if the sensors are frozen up i would sugest deicer speryed over them might be an idea to get the ice off it all then maybe some wd40 or equivelant to stop the ice getting on them might help?

not haveing a d2 im not quite sure, but will determie if its the sensors frozen up or not would it not?

i know that the cold damp conditions dont help the air systems as my freinds p38 suspension system cuts out a lot and i know of another p38 that dose to. especialy when it goes below 0 degrees

Update on SLS problem tues 16 feb - Discovery TD5

Ok, the weather has been milder today so I managed to get out and have a look.

Sluiced all the ice and snow off the underneath of the car to get at the ride height adjusters. Cleaned them best as I could in situ, then sprayed loads of WD-40 to see if that might help.

Fired her up and went for a drive. The SLS warning light came on and no apparent difference to the ride height.

I tried using the manual off-road height adjuster on the dashboard but nothing seemed to happen. I also noticed that when I got home and parked up there was a distinct "tic....toc....tic .....toc" for about 30secs coming from the compressor area.

I've checked the airfilter in the rear pillar and it was in perfect nick - not frozen at all and as dry as a bone.

After more WD-ing I went for another drive however when I got home the low side (drivers side) had raised a bit, not enough but a bit. The high side seemed if anything a bit too high.

I've read from Up I believe that there might be merit in taking the batery negative off and then back on again, in an attempt to reset the system.
All appeared to be working perfectly before this last bought of really cold weather, but If anyone has any other thoughts I would gratefully receive them.

Update on the SLS problem weds 17th feb - hic!

Just had a very good lunch so plezase forgive any spelling errors.

It was a blown fuse!!!! I reckon that when everything was frozen up she tried to run the compressor, but it couldn't work due to the cold so blew a fuse.

As soon as I put in a new one today she was off and pumping like a mad thing and all appears to be good now.

Haven't done too much testing as I'm a bit tired and emotional after lunch. You guys don't know what we in France have to go through - 4 hr lunches it's awful - hic

Hi foss, I was thinking about doing something like that, but I suspect grease will attract road crâp like a magnet.

I'm wondering if I can build some sort of shield to protect them ??

i have considered that as they look so fragile for off roading. I know someone who snapped one once & snapped a biro in half & cable tied it on to get him home!!!

Could make a shield from a couple of small ally plates mounted each side of them, bolted together with a spacer in the middle; could bolt it to the arm so it moves as the sensor does...mmmmmm

A thought just crossed my mind - could I make something out of rubber and create a small "mudflap" just in front of the unit?

I see what you are saying but unless I've misunderstood (very likely!!) you are putting together 2 side pieces with a spacer - this won't stop muck from forward of the sensor will it? Only from the sides?

my rubbish drawing! there'd be a slot to go round the arm, so the plates would be L-shaped...ish

Wot's the stock number on the Dunlop bags? All I can find here in the states are the stockers, and they want close to £130 each for them...

I've actually gotten the coil conversion kit from the UK, £62 since I don't have to pay the VAT, and another 15 to have them shipped...but if I can keep the bags, so much the better.

I do have a 7-seater, but no problems with the insurance here, we just pay a lot more for it up front.
