Having finally been refunded for the dodgy Disco Td5 I bought in January, I have a guy bringing over a 53 reg Disco 2 around 7 tonight...I'm going to be under this one for as long as it takes to inspect every inch of the chassis and the first thing I'll be doing under the bonnet is sniffing the dipstick for any sign of diesel in oil...

If anyone has any particular knowledge of the Disco 2 and Td5 they think I should make a point of checking I'd be very grateful for any assistance...

ignition off check for ecu oil in loom- if it is then it will want new injector loom under rocker box
see Ratty's thread I helped him with)

It should pull like a train and start instantly- listen for any gurgling from fuel cooler area
(long tank drivers side of engine) indicates injector washers or cracked head

Check fuel regulator at rear of head- they leak and your looking at £300 from memory if they do.
listen for in tank fuel pump as they get noisy and fail.
Air con off if the fans still run it has previously overheated and needs nanocom or similar to reset.

50 mph or so on boost is when hot they show cracked heads and overheat according to ratty- take it for a good drive at sustained 50mph.

Airbags worn and excessive compressor run time.

Ace the pumps leak, pipes corrode leak-expensive to fix properly.

Make sure all the electrics function, warning lights work as expected.

Corrosion as you know in chassis- hit it with a light hammer and poke with screwdriver to be sure.

Lastly the sniff of a doubt walk away.

Is there anyone local that could cast an eye for you or an AA or RAC inspection?

Thanks Fan,

I'd have asked Ron but as I said yesterday he's under the weather...don't know if he'll even be working although I think he's usually off on a Friday night...

Trouble with the AA & RAC inspections is the cost...permanent 4x4 costs well over £400...be handy to know one of them who did homers...

I'll be very cautious this time...have to be as it's private sale so no Sale of Goods Act to fall back on...more I think of it maybe private isn't the way to go in spite of my experience with a dealer...
