Hi
I am looking at 10 -12 year old V8i Discovery's. Some on ebay at the mo for around about 4-5k 2001 plate and mileage of 80k there-abouts...

In your humble opinion would the odds be in my favour for ending up with a decent vehicle from this year, with this engine, at that mileage? And is there anything particular I should look for, ask the dealer/seller when discussing the vehicle?

It's purpose is as a general utility vehicle with light farm use, and I want something more comfortable than Defender to get about in.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Kind Regards

Mark
P.S - No idea what model it is for the prefix; sorry!

Are you looking at Disco 1's or 2's?

If a 1 then check for rust, boot floor, inner rear arches, sills and so on. And then just make sure stuff works.

If a D2 then they tend to suffer less rust issues, but I'd still check. More electronics to go wrong though. So check it works. If it has ACE and rear air suspenison (likely) these will need checking too.

Most D2's don't have a centre diff lock lever and rely fully on the TCS. Some model years you can buy a simple kit to add the lever and get access to the diff lock, other years you can't (I forget which ones).

As good as the TCS is, if you are using the vehicle around the farm off road then you'll likely benefit from reinstating the diff lock.

The 4.0 V8's are more prone to HG issues and over heating, this shouldn't be a major concern, but is worth checking out too.

Why v8 petrol - you know what they do to the gallon? 12-15mpg !!!!

If you want a decent utility vehicle that's more comfortable than a Def,I would suggest going for a late TDi 300 or an early TD5.

And incidentally, you don't need to spend anywhere near £5000 to get something suitable for your needs.
