I am new here so Hello:)

I am just about to sell (or burn) my renault espace, i absolutely hate it:mad: for many reasons.

I am thinking about buying a discovery because i have always really wanted a landrover and want something i can fix without a lap top at the main dealers and that i can get parts for at an acceptable price. I need at least 6 seats (4 kids) I prefer diesel and Manual box.

Looking at 2K max so chances are it may be well used and i need to know what to look at, advice on where to look for for rust/rot would be good also the 4x4 thing is new to me so any advice on how to test/check the various parts of the drive train would be handy.

Also any advice on the rear seats, i would prefer proper rear seats for the kids with 3 point belt but the older 300tdi's seem to all have a folding seat with lap belt?

From what little i know I think i am looking at getting a 300 tdi 5 door discovery 2.5 tdi manual.

Surely there must be a way to convert the side facing third row seats to proper forward facing ones?

If you buy in the next 3 months you'll be paying snow tax on it too.

Check the difflock lever moves left (to engage diff lock) and right to disengage, and that within a few yards the diff lock engages and the light comes on. Also beware the R380 manaul box is a little slow and synchro can go in a few gears, but so long as the oil has been changed regularly they are fine. Other checks would be listening for unusual whining noises, and checking the universal joints for slop (and you'll feel it too, when taking up drive and changing gear). Apart from that, its like any other car to check over. There is a wide variety of different conditions of Disco 1 out there.

i don't think a landy is for you !!!

if you cant search now you'll be **** when you own one !!!
 I own a renault at present so spend most of my life searching and fixing problems:D (it is low mileage because it is always broken).

Thanks Paul c :) that all makes sense to me, used to looking around old cars just wanted to know if there is antything particular to look for that might be expensive, will read up on the R380 gearbox.

So on the universal joint i should be able to feel the slop by hand by getting hold of it and ragging it about?

Anybody ever retro fitted a forwards facing rear seat? I know i have seen newer models with proper forwrds facing seats in the boot anybody know what year they would be available from?

Bit gutted its started snowing, been looking for a week or two now before the snow, would imagine prices will rocket and owt good will be snapped up.

Thanks again for the advice

Forward facing seats come in with Disco 2 (99 on). You probably can't fit them to a D1 as the car is completely different. You probably don't want a D2 as they are complicated to fix compared with the older ones. If you did manage to fit forward facing seats to an earlier model I very much doubt whether you would be able to insure them. There are no seat or belt mounting points.
