I'm popping back to London next weekend and plan to buy a replacement Battery for my '97 Disco. It's cheaper and easier to source than here in France.

Halfords do an 072 standard size at £103 - but I'm wondering if anyone uses a 644 and how much/where they bought it from?

halfords are quite expensive so would look at getting a battery elsewhere.

any local parts supplier will probably have one in stock.

General consensus is that agricultural suppliers often have good, powerful batteries for a fair price. Get a high CCA and make sure it fits the batterybox with the poles the correct shape and correct side.

after dismounting the fuse box I managed to get the positive cable going to the starter engine running below the fuel filter and the servo brake then alongside the right wing

then moved the negative cable on the other side (it was a bit tight for this one)

now I have my pos and neg wires crossed so it accepts the "usual" batteries provided by any french supplier

I can still have a trip to London from time to time, but not for smuggling car batteries across the Channel :D

Yes, you're right of course (bobbler).

Only £65 for a suitable size, or £84 for an equivalent 'Varta' brand with free delivery!

My only concern was finding somewhere open late on a Saturday so I can pick it up whilst I'm there.

I guess ebay and european delivery is the way to go...

jyhelle - I can do without all the faffing to re-route the cables, and it's another excuse to stock up on other contraband :)

They take a hell of a pounding, have heaver cases, hold up a whole lot longer. Thats all we used on the farm with all vehicles. Also you can buy bags of battery acid to keep your batteries top off, low acid wears out plates and when you add water you just weaken the acid levels for the chemical reaction of the battery

I dont know about the south east and london but down west Mole Valley Farmers started opening all day saturday and others are following suit. Though mind you, I get cheaper batteries online than mole valley, and with better warrantee. Not a lot of use to the OP,though.

manbat are usually pretty cheap for batteries, check them online.

i would advise 072 as the best size for disco, it is the same form factor as another model but a higher output (apparently)

Over the last few years i have bought loads of batteries and i find the one that always give me good service is the Bosch and they tend to come out on tops in the car books ( Mags ) as well,Worst battery ive ever had was a Newmax,PS i'm only talking about sub £100 batteries as gel type tend to be expensive.

Just ordered from your link discool. Very friendly on the phone.

My last battery has lasted nearly 5 years, but in the winter it has to work in -10 celsius for a few months, hence the need for a new one for this winter.

Thanks again for the link.

A little late, as I just see you have ordered, but incase anyone else is looking, I got this one...

Alphaline / n/a / Battery

The Battery Mega store where really helpful on the phone, and next day free delivery too - and they delivered to my work without any problems.

Just fits in too...
