Hi, we've recently purchased our first Landy, Discovery 3, hubby took it and the kids off roading across the moors yesterday and got themselves stuck, after a while he got free and reversed out the way he came but now there is a constant burning / rubbery smell lingering even after being stationary for hours after, any ideas much appreciated

Check the electric handbrake, a well known source of problems. Modern Land Rover products are not really meant to go on anything more serious than a bit of damp grass or a small puddle, too much electronic stuff to go wrong.

If he wants to use it safely off road he needs to go to an organised event where he can get advice on what it can and cant do.
Never go off roading alone.
