Bull bars

Hi all

I have just bought a second hand bullbar for my discovery.
It's in pretty good nick but there are some patches of surface rust that needs tidying up.
I have noticed that the paint is actually a plastic coating, would any one know if there is a way to repair this or does it all have to come off?
My thoughts are that it may all have to come off and respray it or get it powder coated.
If any one has any experience of recovering them I would appreciate their input.

Personally I'd remove all that plastic and get it painted up. Powder coating is not worth the money imo because as soon as it chip's you get rust spreading in unseen places.

I stripped the bullbars i bought and painted them with black hammerite - look very good!!!

Strip it. Major pita in my experience, maybe a shot blaster might manage it?

Lol, yeah maybe! usually only the rusty bits though, you think it's going so well and then 'oh no, it's well stuck..."

A hot air gun makes it a lot easier............just to make it pliable NOT turn it into sticky goo

I agree with blue beasty ive just done my side steps, heat with a blow lamp, slit down one side and peel it all off

If its the plasticoat covering its a pita even with a shotblaster

Plastic coat is a total ball ache to remove. Nitromors and stripper wont touch it, and neither does shot blasting. Depending on the condition of it, a hot air gun or torch may just ease it off with scraping, but I had to burn it off with a hot torch, i.e propane or similar.

Whatever finish you go for, you will need to remove it all to near enough bare metal. Personally I get most things powdercoated. Its cheap and very durable if done properly and gives a nice finish.

I find a wire cup brush on a grinder works well.

I will have a go at it tomorrow, guess I had better hide the swearbox!

Had a bit of a go today and it seems easier scoring the plastic with a Stanley knife then warming it up with the wifes hairdryer and peeling it off.
The hardest bit is going to explain to the wife the state of her hairdryer!

Ok, borrowed a heat gun, scored the plastic and heated it up. It came off a treat, it took about 2 hours and that included rubbing down the metal prior to spraying.
Easy peasy

Handy one to fall on. Going to fleabay the bars I took off Red but was worried about the cracking coating. For the sake of a couple of hours scraping I may get a bit more for 'em if they look tidier.
