I am totally confused after trying to find out where we stand on the legality of bull bars. I have a '94 Classic Rangie and have been tempted to buy one of many wrap-around bull bars for sale on ebay however, there are so many conflicting statements as to their legality after the May 2007 law change. I can fully understand the reason behind changing their construction to plastic, therefore lessening the danger to any pedestrian who may get hit however, surely a heavy duty, or winch bumper would cause far more serious injury, and yet as far as I can be sure, these are still perfectly legal. Am I correct in assuming that because my Range Rover was produced at a time when tubular metal bull bars were allowed, that I can fit a second hand one of the type sold at the time?
 
You can fit on older cars but not easy getting new ones these days from some suppliers. Never did understand peoples problem with bull bars, gettig hit with metal bumper followed by metal bonnet not much differant to bullbar, just if its your car less damage.
 
the issue seems to have been with deflecting the errant pedestrian. it is claimed than in the event of a collision, a pedestrian would have some chance of bouncing / rolling off the vehicle. with a bull bar, there is a much greater chance of entaglement, and the injuries would be far more worserer.

also, as I understand it, the legality issue referred to the manufacturer of the bull bars, not the fitment.
 
I think there was just a popular media campaign against them, it was the topic of the day, like dangerous dogs or pedos or air rifles. I remember when there was all the hubbub about it our MP had his removed even though they were fitted on his disco from new. Semi interesting related story too that as well was that he had to get rid of his private plate too because it was a terrorism risk.
