Bulkhead rust hole nearside - help please

I'm trying to slowly restore my 1988, 90 back to former glory and whilst taking some of the under-paint rust off, the metal/rust gave way leaving a hole, just under the lower door hinge on the drivers side. the hole is about £2 coin size, is this an easy weld up fix or possibly a proper ally mesh and filler job, or more serious??

patch weld, or splice a new section in. Probably about £75 at your local garage or almost free if you do it yourself
 
cheers i will look into it, also is there any reason why there is absolutely no rust at all on the passenger side? cheers - will
 
i think a replacement pillar is the way forward. is it easy to get the old part out? i'm guessing its a grinding job, or is it a separate part?
 
The replacement door pillar comes with the bottom bracket which bolts onto the outrigger and is the main mounting point for the bulkhead onto the chassis. If you've ground back the rust around your hole and it's only the size of a 2 quid coin I'd patch it. Replacing the pillar and/or bottom bracket is a pretty big job.
 
no point in replacing more than you need to,i've just replaced both pillars completely,both bottoms and both footwells.wish i'd only had a hole the size of a 2 quid coin!

The patch will probably last just as long as the rest of the pillar providin' ye cut beyond the rusty bits. Make sure the new metal is rust free and cleaned, weld it in,seal it, paint it and bung shed loads of clear waxoyl in the channel behind it;) :D

yeh ok i will give that a go. i think i may be due the whole lot like you bigchap in the near future as the footwells are on there way out, obviousley a piece has been welded on ages ago and the rust still has come through!

how much did all that cost you, or did you do it yourself?

did it myself,about £120 in bits and lots of bloody welding!
 
ooooh tricky. not a job for the light hearted i take it! yeh i think i will give it a miss untill i have to. cheers everyone. patching for me!
 
I'm doing footwells, outriggers and rear x member at the moment on me 110. Rest assured it's about 10 times the amount of work that you originally thought.
