Broken transfur box, still ok to drive?!

Hiya!

I'm looking at buying a 110 tipper for my Tree Surgery business, I have been offered one at a good price by a fellow member of a forum I am part of. The only issue with it is that he says the transfer box is broken, but he says he's still driving it ok? I need to drive it about 200 Mike's home and was wondering if that would be ok? Basically is it ok to use it with a broken transfur box and what does that mean in everyday driving terms?!
 
Not sure what's wrong with it, he's still driving it. Does that mean it would be driving in 2wd? Forgive my lack of knowledge!
 
My 97' Defender 110 300 TDi had the Diff lock jammed on and I could not get it unlocked (did eventually with a big stilson) So 2nd hand box required.
Drove it from Edinburgh to Elgin about 170 miles no problems.
The most noticeable problem was at T junctions especially tight ones when on full lock as the near side would crunch and lurch when pulling off so I just used a larger turning circle till I found what the problem was.
That was over two years ago and I am now getting ready to change the transfer box and gearbox.

But as Trax says What does he mean by broken?
 
The guy says that the rear wheels spin but the fronts don't?! He then says that when he tries to engage 4wd (I thought landrovers were permanent 4wd?!) the front axle still won't drive. I'm assuming that what he thinks is the 4wd engagement lever is actually the low range box selector lever? If it is only driving on the rear wheels could it be the front diff?

could be that diff lock is not engaging ,something as simple as worn or badly ajusted linkage could cause that, or it is in diff lock and theres a fault in front axle such as bust diff ,cv or worn spline, they are permanent 4wd, drive been split by center diff, without engaging diff lock vehicle will stand still if a half shaft fails or other fault as all drive would be lost through that point ,if you engage diff lock the other axle would have to drive so you would move ,but axle with failure wouldnt give any drive
 
jamesmartin's explained it all .. it could be the cdl, it could be a diff, it could be a half-shaft, it could be the cdl linkage .. I'd also add it could be that someone doesn't know what they're doing with the gear levers or the drive train ...

If it's driving on the rears now it suggests that the cdl is OK and is engaged, giving the rear axle drive, but that there's a problem with the front axle, which could be anywhere along the front drive train from the transfer box output to the front drive members .. any component, or number of components, in that front area may be fubar'd.

I'd also suggest that if it's driving now there's no reason you can't drive it home, but I'd look at it pretty soon .. before something else gives way.

That's a bit of a hard call considering nobody knows what's wrong with it.

Start by asking if he's driving it with diff lock engaged. If he is then there's a break somewhere in the drive train to the front.

Do a little research on LR permanent 4wd and centre difflock....If you don't know the basics of how it works you cant even ask the right questions to work out what's wrong.
