Broken seat latch

Hi, I have a Defender 110 (1997). The pull latch to release the rear folding seat has broken. I've tried fishing with a wire and long nose pliers, but don't really know how far down I should be fishing. It looks an easy fix once the seat is released, but impossible without the fold forward. Anyone done this?
