Some idiots buggered mi PTO winch (oh no, hang on, no, it was me) , I only realised I'd buggered it when I went round to mi mates to winch up some trees and it didn't work. The drive train for the winch goes from the gear box down to a mini UJ then along to another mini UJ then along to another mini UJ. All this spins as it should. The last bit in the train is another UJ to the winch itself, the shaft turns but the UJ doesnt. I'm assuming the idiot (oh no, hang on, that was me) has buggered the 'sommat' that holds the shaft to the mini UJ. Is this a fixable bit or will I have to find another shaft?

Thanks

It might be possible to get a replacement or to just use one of the others and replace it with a peice of bar. It really depends on the angle of the rod as it will need uj's if it is angled atall. Failing that you could try and use a steering uj in its place.

Thanks discobasher, I've decided to take the whole drive train off to check its condition. Its rattled since I bought the 90 and as it doesn't work I've got nothing to loose. I've done a search on t'internet and there is a bewildering selection of shafts and UJ's. I should have more of an idea when its in bits..Thanks Again

It sounds like you've overloaded it and snapped the shear pin. These are eay to get hold of. and are a builtin safety feature to prevent you from ripping the landy in half if something goes wrong and you overload the winch.

I have seen a tractor hauling trees up a steep slope with a pto winch and because the restraining rope was uphill and quite high up the tree, when the tree that was been pulled up got stuck the cables straightened and lifted the tractor off it's wheels and rolled it straight over. A properly rated shear pin wouldn't have allowed that to happen.

Shear pin, great, that's the bit of information I was after. Like I said the shaft turns but the UJ doesnt. I was hoping it would be a pin or something. I noticed that the other shafts and UJ's have pins.

Cos the winch wasn't working it was a sod to wind the cable back in tidy by hand and I had about 10 foot that wouldn't go in cos it was bunched up on the drum. I've unwound the whole lot off the drum. I'm sure I read on here that people recommend none metal cable as its lighter and safer. is this true? The stearing feels lighter without the steel cable on the winch.

Hay ho, time to lie for hours under a oily land rover. Thanks for the info

Dyneema Plasma winch rope much lighter takes up less room on the drum and no steel splinters in your hands. If your going to get one you'll also need a new fairlead as you can't use the roller ones with plasma. Look on Ebay US it a fook of a lot cheaper than on ebay uk.
