Unfortunately it's down to the buyer in a private sale, once they have agreed the sale etc.. The mantra with L322 purchases is always make sure you have the money for worse case scenario... gearbox, gearbox... gearbox! I bought my L322 with limp mode for peanuts, seller gave me the "just needs servicing" speech... I paid the asking minus the cost of a new box fitted, turned out to be a £20 solenoid. OP might be lucky and either a new battery or service will fix the problem?

At some point the sh one T hits the fan with RR ownership, if you can't turn a spanner they are best avoided unless you have deep pockets!

I don't do my own spannering. I bought my L322 over 11yrs ago. I still have the same one and she wants for nothing. However, I don't have deep pockets, I just bought a well looked after vehicle and have continued to look after her. I do what is needed as it is needed.
It is only in the last few years, as the model went over 15yrs old, that people started thinking they could pick up a cheap L322 and run them on a shoestring. You can't. Even if you can do most of the work yourself, unless you place 0 value on your time, and get your parts VAT free, they are not cheap to maintain. Any work I ever did on anything, I factored my time in when assessing what it really cost. Might save a few pennies , but it takes slices out of your life.
So I wouldn't say walk away if you can't do it yourself. I would say don't buy cheap and not expect problems. Buy the best you can afford, whilst keeping money in reserve. If you can't afford to do that, buy a P38
