My 2.5 na is breathing pretty heavy out the breather pipe is this normal for these engine and is it anything to worry about I have seen people re root the pipe onto the chaise or do I just go for the 200tdi? Also it does not like 5th gear seems happy just to sit in 4th doing 55-60.

could be a whole load of trouble, long time since you posted and no replies. for me this meant worn rings when I had these symptoms but it was able to soldier on for a long time before I repalced the engine. Coke bottle oil catcher helped for a bit, got terminal when it was breathing out the dip stick.Do a search a lot of info on here and people helped me loads.

Sounds like the engine's just getting worn- a lot of 12J and 19J engines seem to do it. As long as the pressure isn't excessive the breather system will take care of it and a worn engine will generally keep going regardless. A NA landy is never going to be a speed demon :p

Bear in mind that 200tdis are also all getting on a bit now, and donor discoveries aren't as plentiful or cheap as they used to be. Doing the swap isn't the no-brainer it used to be IMO. A 300tdi can be fitted but is a little more work.

Worn rings... just rebuilt mine as it was bleeding oil vapour out everywhere. If yours is ex-mil and had a new bulkhead in service it'll probably have had a 300 tdi bulkhead fitted like mine. Also many more 300tdi's out there I believe, not sure which is easier to fit.
I'm keeping the na, cost me about £900 to have my engine rebored and assembled as a short engine, I stripped it prior and built it back up.

2.5 na and tds were prone for ring and bore wear , when we used to recondition lots of those you rarely found any without considerable bore wear, tdis on the other hand rarely had unless completely ragged

Just seen these posts thanks for the advice since posting I have bought a 200tdi with 140k on the clock bought new clutch new crankshaft oil seals ect so hopefully should be good in the end
