Braking-pulls to right... sometimes

If I press the brake pedal quickly, machine veers wildly to the right hand side. (series 3 88" with servo)

If I press it slowly, shoes bite eqaully on both sides and it slows down in a straight line.

Anyone?

check the brake adjustment first, make sure that the wheels on the same axle have equal drag
if it still pull chack the brake condition make sure the drums and shoes are in good condition and that the cylinders arnt leaking
still pulling ?
try and figure out if there is a blockage in a pipe somewhere

you may find you have a hub seal leaking and contaminating the brake shoes...

i've had this a couple of times on the rear of my 88, nearside hub seal failed twice, the second time i replaced the spacer/land as well as the seal which cured the problem..

look at the inside of your wheels for evidence of oil dripping onto them, it's really bad once that happens but a relatively quick and easy job to sort out

Yes leaking hub seals sounds like it could be the go. I know the swivels are past their best. Also the rear axle breather blocked which resulted in the diff pinion oil seal blowing. I think I also saw small amounts of oil weeping from the hub gasket on both sides of the rear axles but I need to check this. I'll get a look tommorow morning, it could be the time to take on the swivels and wheel bearings job.

I'd do a thorough visual check on the brake pipe leading to the front left brake first. It could be that the metal pipe has been crushed so that the oil can't flow quickily enough to the hydraulic wheel cylinder when you press the pedal hard. It's more likely that you've got either a hydraulic leak or an axle oil leak into the LHS front brake drum though.

I'm having the exact same problem with my Series 3 109".

Could sombody please point me in the general direction of an "Idiots guide" to help me (and anybody else) to rectify this?

Not an uncommon problem, the guys have mentioned all the probable. One thing I have noticed is that if I use my brakes a lot on roundabouts, I develop a pull in the steering as one set of brake shoes wear slightly more than the other side... In the days the landie's were built they used to say only brake in a straight line. :doh: An new town roundabouts didn't really exist. This only brings about a firm pull though, not a wild roller coaster ride.
