Noticed today that ocasionaly my brakes sound like they are grinding, checked the pads and there is plenty left all round.

Any ideas what may be happening?

They also pull to one side but I think this is because I need to do the bearings.

No - the pad is meant to sit within the caliper, so that pressure can be applied by the piston. What happens is the stops that the pads sit up against, wear through and the pads slide through the caliper and stop against the disk hub instead.

I just looked today, looks like it is the near side caliper is nackered as the inner pad has worn and is scoring the disc but the outer is nearly new.

I am going to get a new caliper for that side and discs and pads.

Best to replace both sides to keep even braking across the axle.

If yu are interested, I bought a complete set of disks, calipers and pads for a Disco rear axle, but am changing the axle instead, so yu can have them at cost if you want. I am only in Basingstoke.

Ok see what you mean, I assume this is a new caliper job?

No, it isn't neccesarily a new caliper job.

I found on mine that the rear pads were wearing unevenly, so I ordered some new pads.

When I tried to fit them, they wouldn't go in far enough even after I had scrupulously cleaned the padbay of the caliper, so I had to grind off the paint and a small amount of backing plate to get them to fit.

My advice would be, get some Mintex pads from Paddocks, about £8 per axle set from memory and try just replacing the pads.

My brakes improved immeasurably after I did this.

Cheers
Dave

hi james,

i agree with the biglad, i did mine just before him for my mot.

all brakes wear at slightly different rates, just try putting new padsin first.
also whist your at it it may be worth replacing th pins and anti rattle springs now a lot to buy off ebay.

i replaced mine as half of them were missing!!!!!
but well worth it and as dave said you'll be amazed the difference new pads make....

don't just replace callipers with out checking them first they are about £60+

cheers mark

The disc is now badly scored and the other side is part rusty and part worn so I need to change that, in terms of the caliper, I would be suprised if the wear I have is just normal, I think it is far more likely that the calipers have had it.

Sorted the brakes at the wekend, new calipers, discs, pads and bearings on the rear. Now drives like a dream, I can't believe it passed the MOT like it, I don't think the brakes have ever been that good since I have owned it! Might be time to check the fronts properly if the rears have made that much difference then maybe my fronts are nackered as well!!!

Yes thanks, they fitted a dream except the bolt holes on the calipers I had to run a drill through to get the bolt to fit, just very slightly too small.

Looks like you had a good time on sunday!
