Another problem -

Sometimes when I go to brake, the pedal goes to the floor and they are all but ineffective but when I release the pedal and brake again, the brakes are really good.

Pads/discs are new, no fluid loss.

Sometimes the brakes are great with minimal pedal movement other times I have to dip the pedal.

I've done a search with heaps of threads on brakes but nothing like the problem I'm having.

Thoughts as ever, much appreciated.

Hi mate

Had this on mine, check your wheel bearings, if they're loose or shot then the wheel wont rotate true it will wander just a fraction and this can cause the disc to hit the pads and push the caliper out. When you hit the pedal the first time it just takes up the slack caused by the pads being pushed back by the disc, hit them again and they now bite on the disc, sounds like bollox I know but my rear nearside bearing fell to bits when I changed it, put the new one on and the brakes were fine.

As above, my osf wheel bearing was very loose and had been causing the same problem with braking. Now the bearing has been tightened brakes are perfect.

maybe of relevance had this problem on a old Rover P6 found to be soft /perished rubber vacuum pipe to the servo collapsing blocking suction causing no servo assist on first operation of brakes

Thanks all,

As you correctly pointed out - Wheel bearing problem. Changes the bearing and swivel seal as it was weeping and the brakes are suprisingly sharp for such a heavy motor.

Cheers
