Hi,

you guys will be sick of hearing from me but here i go again.

When i bought the car the brakes went. I replaced the ABS relay and they worked again due to the pump now functioning. The pump would run constantly and the ABS, TC & i lights would come on when i braked. I then installed a brand new Accumulator. Doing this stop the warning lights from coming on but the pump would still run constantly.

Well the week i had noticed that the pitch noise from the pump would change now and again but then normally return to the usual noise. So then the pump has now stopped working, all the warning lights are back on, the brakes are terrible. Could this be the relay again or does it sound like the ABS pump is done? The relay was my 1st thought but it didnt smell burnt out and when i tried to make up another relay it didnt make any difference.

Please can a wise Range Rover guru help!

What vehical is it? I dont think the pump is designed to run continuously so it has probably burnt out.

You must have been loosing pressure somwhere to cause it to keep running?

You really need to find any underlying problems. Replacing a burnt out pump is not going to be a long term fix if the replacement is continuously running, it too won`t last long. I`ve no advice to offer about what the original source of your troubles may be, but, especially with brakes, paying for expert diagnosis may be an investment as well as a safer choice.

sorry it's a range rover 4.6 hse.

So replacing the pump wont fix the problem? I realise that the pump is not supposed to run constantly. Well if its not the pump then what else could it be?

If pumps running all the time, then it`s being told to. Maybe it`s not building up required pressure, maybe pressure sensor faulty, maybe faulty relay as Gemsdad says. I don`t know enough to offer definative advice, but wouldn`t mess about replacing expensive components without having pretty good idea they were at fault. £50 at a dealer to diagnose problem may hurt our self reliant, diy pride , but....

i'm in the glasgow area. I read on rangerovers.net that it could be a bad or weak pump. If there is a leak where is the likely area/most common areas. I'm not the best with mechanics but i'm a quick learner and usually turn into an expert by the time i come to sell them. So if anyone has a problem with there x-type let me know! Ha

just get underneath it and check all your brake pipes and calipers to see if they are leaking.

I`ve had a quick skite thro` RAVE and seems like relay 17 which you say you`ve replaced is unique, but relay 15 (& 2 pre-MY99) are interchangable with others of same colour. You could swop these with others. (not each other tho`). I doubt it is either of these but it takes 5 mins `n` costs nowt, `n` can harm nowt. The book says the pressure valves are inside the pump, and says the pump is a not servicable item. Not good news I`m afraid. But as I say I`ve no personal experience of this, so maybe some-one else can offer a more optimistic point of view?

He`s either out cruising in an absolutely perfect P38, or given up the ghost.... I dunno the truth, but am prepared to place a bet...

Yeah I recon it broke, Again, and he traded it in.

No p38 can go for this long without breaking and needing advice from here lol

hope he didn't top himself, at least he won't have done the old hose pipe/exhaust method. car didnt fecking run long enough to choke a canary let alone a strapping jock!

think i'll get a replacement ABS pump to see if it sovles the problem. Will check car for leaks tomorrow. I am going to get a used pump off of eBay i think from a guy who sell Land Rover parts. Not gonna spend £700 on a new pump.

Trouble is you`re taking a punt. .. No. You`re taking 2 punts.
1: ABS pump faulty.
2. 2nd hand pump is good.
If you get 2nd hand pump at good price, maybe good option. But go into it with eyes open.
