Freelander 1 Brakes after replacement

Hi.
I recently replaced almost every brake component on my 1998 Freelander 1 and now I am faced with a strange problem.
After bleeding the brakes as per the RAVE manual, I now have the first stroke of the brake pedal going all the way to the floor with the next one firming up to normal (APROX. 1 inch below top)
Any ideas. The components left to replace are:
  • Master Cylinder
  • ABS module.
Wonder if it could be the Master Cylinder?

When I replaced the ABS module on my 1999 I thoroughly bled the brakes as described by Rave - and they were terrible. So I did the whole process again... and they were great after that. In the end, I put about 3 regular size bottles of brake fluid through the system.

I'm not saying you don't have a fault with the system, just that's sort of the experience I had. I did replace the ABS unit though and that was fiddly to 'prime' - it had air blocks that wouldn't clear and I ended up disconnecting the pipes to the brakes and using a syringe to pump fluid directly into the unit. My first round of bleeding was after priming the unit, but there may have been some residual air still.

We do need a pic of your Freelander though.

While we're waiting for it, here's one of my brother's in an F3 in Iceland.

Another Angler then!

This ^^^^

Long pedal travel is almost certainly down to the rear shoes not being adjusted correctly.
There is really nothing to adjust inside the drum. I have installed new shoes, brake cylinder, adjustment bar (Automatic Tensioner) and drum. Adjusted the handbrake. What next.

The correct procedure involves backing the handbrake adjuster off, so the cables are slack. Then apply the foot brake firmly several times to set the auto adjuster correctly. Then readjust the HB so the lever comes up 3 clicks. Then check the rear drums aren't dragging.

Thank you for the tip. I will update status tomorrow.;)

I suppose a pic of a rear brake assembly is better than nothing.

Actually.... remembering back to the unforgettable "Freelander brakes are not adjustable" thread... just in case... can anyone confirm the adjuster is on the correct way round in this pic? Even on that thread when it was pointed out it was the wrong way round, I couldn't tell any difference!

Anybody else see anything odd about the springs in this photo or is this how a 98 drum brake should look?

Anybody else remember the chap who cursed this forum and everyone in it for saying the rear brakes were self adjusting then suddenly went quiet after posting photo's of his work? Might be an idea for the OP to post his own brake hubs instead of a random photo off the interweb. Then we might be able to see if they are fitted correctly.

I just edited the last post Nodge. Take a look.

Lol. That explains why the hub is missing. The assembly looked very familiar to me, but it would. I did a Y plate Focus rear shoes just last week. The whole hub/drum comes off on those.
It's very similar to the FL brakes though.

LOL, it also explains why the suspension and exhaust look different. :D

I remember. It was me who spotted the adjuster cam wheel was round the wrong way.
