Brake problem, maybe disc related?

Hi all.
I've developed a problem with my brakes. When braking the pedal kind of judders, but it's not like a recurring judder it's more like the pedal feels like its going down in steps as I put more pressure on it. I changed my brake pads last week which were nearly on the verge of being dangerous and I thought this might cure it but it hasn't. The rear discs could probably do with being changed as there is a couple of grooves from the old brake pads but they're on the outer edge of the disc. So any ideas or comments would be appreciated before I start forking out.
Many thanks.

you will need new pads as the others will have worn to old disc, often bearings just need nipping up to remove freeplay worth putting in some fresh grease but dont fill hub totally

I'd certainly check the wheel bearings. When I had a tdi, I had a problem with it pulling under braking. When the guy took the wheel bearings out, most were blue (overheated) and one of the front ones was collapsing. When braking, this caused the wheel to twist causing the pull to one side. Discs also worth checking as they are a "relatively" cheap replacement.
Cheers!

Do you have ABS?
I kept getting the ABS cutting in when there was no wheel lock up at all and it feels a bit like your description.
It was accompanied by the ABS light not going out very consistantly on start up and the ABS system not doing its calibration bit on start up( Turn on ignition and "Boing" from LH side of engine bay).
Fixed by plus gassing and tapping the ABS sensors on each hub and cleaning up the huge ABS relay's contacts/connector(on the eng bay fuse box).

Hi Imp. Where abouts on the hub are the sensors? My ABS light has been on for about 5 months. The guy I bought the Disco off said it happens occasionally and to tap the sensor then reset the light. As I didn't know where the sensor was I just left it.
Cheers.

THE ABS teeth run around the outside of the CV joint, and the sensor which looks at the teeth is fitted through the top Swivel pin.

Haynes manual will give you some clues where the sensors are - Front & Rear.
Don't forget the relay.
And don't trap your head between the tyre & the wheel arch - I know NO-ONE would but, you know, be careful & good luck.

A quick update, changed the discs today and found out exactly what my brake pedal knock was.
