Started to replace the brake pads on the front which has now turned into pads, discs all round, three wheel brearings, a drivers front hum and an o/s/r brake splash guard ! Whoever had the drivers front hub apart had snapped two bolts in the spline drive hub, they had then glued - yes you herd it - glued in the bolts with silicon. So my question is if you can help, when removing the circlip on the fron hubs I noticed that there are shims that seem to act as spacers. On the rear there are not? Should there be a shim on there and if so what is the setting I should be looking for? Mine is a 2009 defender 90 if that helps. Pointing in the direction of a Haynes manual would be great as I carnt seem to find one!

You won't find a Haynes for 2009 model. You can get a copy LR workshop manual pdf on CD off ebay for a few quid. Takes a bit of searching to find the right pages for the job you are doing (1200 ish pages) but well worth the money for the information you get. And make a note of page numbers for next time.

you wont find shims on the rear as they are to locate the cv fully into the stub axle, h\drive member bolts are 10.5 rather than the std 8.8 and shear quite easy

I'm not near my manuals, but the official parts book doesn't show any shims there. I'd guess that's because the rear half shafts are happy with end float, whereas at the front you're stopping the CV joint from moving in or out with the strange forces coming through it from the half shaft there.

edit. That's what you get for thinking about something else for a few minutes while you write. Blimmin James Martin nips in and steals your thunder. Harrumph.

The previous owner had drilled and tried to remove but instead made a mess. New hub will be ordered in the morni hotel

ensure theres no free play when nut is tightened and if you spin the hub when nut is just nipped up it should not have much more resistance when you spin it with the nut fully tight
Brilliant, much appreciated help It's been one of them jobs that has developed - I managed to clean all the chassis and paint at the same time. Will take an eternity to clean the floor mind you!! Two of the hubs just flew off but I had to use a puller on the other two. Gutted as when someone has taken poor care of the servicing like this usually spells danger!!

have you not had it long, might be worth changing transmission and axle oils if your uncertain of when they were last done
