brake lights not working

I have noticed today that none of my brake lights are working. I checked the fuses and they are fine. The rest of the lights are fine it's just the two side brake lights and the high level light that don't work. I thought it might be the switch but I don't know where this is located. I 'm not a mechanic but I don't mind having a go at things myself, I have managed to stop a sunroof leak so I can't be that incompetent! Any experience or ideas please let me know.

The brakelight switch is located above the brake pedal.

Hi, When you g to the shop for the new switch, take the old one with you because they fitted a new model a few years ago and this needs a different connector.
Got my new switch from the LR dealer and he also hab a (sorry no word in english)
""piece of wire with the oldstile connector on one and new style connector on the other side""
 
Thanks for all the advice but I just got the replacement part from LR daylight robbery LTD for £7.00 (must have missed a zero off there somewhere) and replaced myself which cured the problem and was a 5 minute job.

Same problem - all fuses etc checked and all other lights working. Husband had come to the same conclusion that it is the switch. Will be picking one up in the morning.
 
had the same issue on tue'day found out it was the negative wire on the lower break lights that had corroded slightly, so just another option for you to look at nikkiclu
 
I know this is an old post but I've been using this forum for diagnosing problems since I bought my Discovery last year. I found this post via a google search and I just thought I'd post an image for anyone else who is having similar issues with their brake lights. I was unable to repair the switch and have had to order a new one.
The image shows the switch broken down into it's component parts with an arrow showing the broken contact.

Hi, just checked brake lights for tomorrows MOT. Knew one was not working, as failed MOT for it, found both not working when I went to replace bulb!! How do I know if it's the switch or perhaps a faulty wire? Not much chance of 2 bulbs going! Have retest for MOT tomorrow!

Went to village garage for MOT, Council MOT station closed, failed on list of light problems. Headlights aiming to high! He could have tweaked them! Never had that before. Have heard new regs relating to beam came into force March, bringing them into line with HGV vehicles. Hazard light switch faulty, can't find anything wrong with hazard lights. Stumped over stop lights as don't know how to test stop light switch! Please can anyone help? Regards Bunty.
 
There are three stop lights on the back of a Disco. One on each side of the vehicle and a high level brake light at the top of the window in the rear tailgate door. If that one is working then it's a fair bet that the switch and wiring are OK so you should start your faultfinding by replacing the bulbs. Make sure that the connection in the bulbholder to the body of the bulb is clean and functional.
Regarding your headlight aim, the purpose of the MoT test is to examine the vehicle in the condition in which it is presented for the test. Being pedantic, if that was all, then it could have resulted in a fail followed by a repair bill and then another retest, but since there were other "reasons to refuse" a test, he just handed it back with the bill for the test fee for you to repair.
You are quite within your rights to discuss with the tester the reasons why he failed what.
He might have thought that the hazard lights switch should have lit up with the flashers, but on the Disco the only indication is the two direction flashers in the instrument binnacle, but you might have to provide some documentary evidence say from you owner's handbook to substantiate your claim.

Hi all, my 2006 RR Sport is playing up. If I turn my lights off then my brake lights work but I can hear a clicking noise near the gear selector, if I turn my lights on there’s no brake lights or clicking but the hi level brake light is on. Any ideas as it’s driving me mad!!

I've had to do mine too.
what fooled me for a minute was the third wire, until i remembered.
