I want to buy a bottle jack for my LR Defender. These are pretty thin on the ground where I live, especially since I won’t buy one made in China.

“Mega” brand is available (Melchor Gabilondo, Vigo, Spain) and I’d be happy with that. There is a 3-ton model (costs equiv. GBP 18) and a 15-ton (GBP 36). Am I right in thinking that the 15-ton one, with its spare capacity and better able to lift a fully-loaded vehicle, is the one to go for?

But how can I be sure it’s compact (low) enough to fit under the axle when I have a flat tyre, and extends high enough (gives enough lift)?

Can see this thread is very old - so guess your problem's solved - but I do have an additional query for any bright spark.

I bought a standard bottle jack - and right now have fashioned a cradle to sit on the top-stud (30mm) out of a piece of old, dried Christmas tree trunk!

That's proved sufficiently hard/dry to brace under the axle and lift a corner - but clearly not ideal.

I don't have any metalworking equipment (or the skills to go with it) - so has anyone come up with or found for purchase a more elegant solution to adapt a standard bottle jack to the job?

You can get honeycombe hard ABS anti-slip bases which you can stand the jack on to raise it

Intended to be used on mud/loose surfaces, but also gives the extra height a standared bottle jack might need.

No reason why you couldn't improvise a DIY base solution.

I can't access ebay from the office and am not back home now until Friday, but if you need a link, PM me and I'll find Friday.

Usually loads of disco jacks on ebay which have the '2 stage' lift for the height and a better shaped cradle than just a flat piston top if you want to find something else - personally like to use a base to a bottle ajck anyway to give more stability, and wouldn't use one alone to work under the Landy - more emergency use only!

Would love to - but decent breakers yards in short supply round my way.

Any suggestions for one of those online spares/breakers aggregators?

was talking to a guy at the billing show, think he was asking around £10 for jack and handle but will try to get his details for you.

Lives somewhere near peterborough but can post all over country.
