Hi,
I am sure I can't be the first person to notice this but I may be wrong.
Been replacing ACE pump with idler and new belt (usual corroded ACE pipes) and was confused when both Haynes and RAVE said to turn the tensioner bolt clockwise to release the tension. It didn't make sense but I gave it a try but stopped when I realised I was just undoing the bolt, so I wound it back in (anticlockwise as its a left-hander) and when tight any further tightening succeeded in releasing the belt tension - as required.

Also, the belt was quite difficult to get on so I soaked it in hot water for 20 mins while having a cuppa, dried it and then it went on a treat.

Regards,

Hi

I have never read a worse Haynes manual than the one for the series 2 Disco. The number of mistakes, things left out, things made unclear, lack of photos and shockingly bad photos is unreal. And I have been using these manuals since the early seventies!

To be honest, normally I find little to complain about, usually, although a mistake made in the first ever Haynes manuals, to do with connecting the wiring inside the distributor, was copied into all succeeding manuals and has never been corrected to my knowledge. (Distributor? That dates me!) but there is a limit, and this one has found it. I left a rather long email on their website but they never got back to me...

Perhaps I should start a thread and we could all contribute to the list of errors then we could send that to them. Their quality control isn't very good.:5bbanghead:

I'm not sure which bolt you mean but the tensioner (Td5 anyway) is on a spring loaded arm and when you turn the hexagon (and I have to confess I can't remember which way!) you're not unscrewing anything, just moving the arm against the spring loading to allow the belt to slip off. It's very easy to see which way it needs to move when you're in there. I actually found changing the belt easier than I imagined it would be.

And WRT Haynes, the one for my Triumph 5TA is possibly even worse as it only looks at one bike (which isn't standard anyway) and doesn't recognise all the changes before & after.

Aye - I moved the tensioner anti-clockwise to release the belt (and re-fit a new one!)

I don't think RAVE nor Haynes mention WHEN LOOKING FROM THE REAR OF THE ENGINE..... so anti-clockwise it is when you're getting scars from replacing the belt without removing the viscous fan! :D ;)
