Boot welding

I dont live in essex but I dont live far from there but if you supply the floor Ill weld it for you for £150 will be a good job, as long as nothing else is rotten but shouldnt be a problem...

That's about the ball park figure I would charge plus fuel costs (400mile round trip for me). Depending on how far would have to go, maybe needs arches to.
 
If you can....do all the prep work yourself including bare metal for the welds and cable / pipe moving then theres less for the welder to do - he can just get straight on with the welding.I found it easier to chisel the spots out,air chisel even easier than to drill but it depends on the state of the floor.A tip - if you are grinding in there at all then cover your windscreen and other glass cos those hot bits of metal that look like sparks burn in and are sods to get out again.Follow the guides given in the links and you should have no problems.If you present it all ready to weld then its 4 hours max of the hot metal sparky thing.Another tip - replace the useless 'strap' crossmember over the fuel tank with a proper load bearing one like used forward...a much stronger load bay.

I can fab up wheels arches not that much of a problem to do as I have the metal milling tools but when you get the milling tools out ist a lot of hard work to put the bends in straight and get the angles right
 
Evening ladies and gents,

The boot on my 300 tdi is going to need welding before it's MOT in May.

I don't have the skills to do the welding, or the time... my local Landi specialist has quoted up to 24 hours labour to do it... one hell of a bill!! They have done plenty of work for me before so I know they will do a top notch job though.

How much has anyone else paid for this? Is there anyone in Essex who fancies earning some beer tokens?

I live essex/suffolk border, an if i cant do it i know a man who can. Be about same price price as the uvver fellas are quoting ya - sure wont be 1150 sovs!! Fook that. Will be a pukker job too. PM me if ya want it doing :D
 
Going to have to weld my boot floor up soon, Have a few friends in the trade who will lend me a mig to do the job, think its just a confidence thing. Not wanting to cut something out that i shouldnt of cut.

Still i wont have to worry about cutting under the rear seat, its a continous hole across (side to side) about half inch wide..

Just dont drop any change in the back of my Disco...
 
To put things into propesctive, you have been quoted £1160, (inc VAT), just for the boot floor?

On mine, RT Racing of Sheffield billed me under £1800 inc VAT for new boot floor, inner front wings both sides, inner and outer sills both sides, floorpan, sections of the roof, and inner rear arches boths sides, (done properly, not plated over). On top of that was some electrical work. And RT Racing aren't some grotty back street place either.

With this in mind I think that your original quote was a bit steep. You could do most of the prep and re-fit yourself with ease and proberly end up with a bill for around £250 ish?
 
i'm going to move down you're way if i can get away with charging that much lol, £300 plus panel is what we charge for straightforward boot floor change, obviously more if arches etc are gone. maybe they didn't want the work as the quote is well OTT. as for any MOT queries ref; pop rivetting the floor in, its a mute area but my answer would be, early classic range rovers had an aluminium boot floor pop rivetted in and they are the same base structure as a disco, so surely it'd be good enough for a disco?
 
Boot is not required for MOT. Mine went through with a big whole in it and I take mine to a Goverment MOT center - not a garage.

Also went through again after I repaired with fibre glass - about £10.
