Guys, I have a problem with the boot on my P38. The bottom half works fine, but the top section has stopped closing properly.

The lock tends to either half close in that I can still move it half an inch or so, or doesn't close at all, in that I can just lift up open again. Only about 1 in 20 times will or work correctly.

It looks clean and well oiled - anyone have any ideas, its driving me mad!

Thanks

Make sure the lower tailgate is correctly aligned relative to the body by loosening the hinges and adjusting the gate ,Retighten the hinges.Check it latches correctly. If not loosen the striker plates and reposition until it does.
Then check the upper gate aligns correctly with body and lower gate.if not adjust until it does. Then if it does not latch correctly, adjust the striker plate to compensate until it does.

This presumes the latch is functional. It it does not help then the latch may have a mechanical issue and need to be replaced.

Catch is probably broken. There is a piece of plastic on a spring that breaks off. Only thing is a new catch.

Whatever you do don't bang it shut or you'll create other problems. Once you've tried the odd adjustment lay it shut very carefully and push it firmly in the middle. If that works it was more than likely a combination of everything the others have said.

Thanks guys. I have to admit to banging it shut a bit!!. Its odd it works fine some of the time then not at all. I'll have a good look in the morning
