Hi All, just bought a 05 td4 Freelander and doing the service items. It does smoke a bit and has the the later breather already fitted. The boost pipe coming from the inter cooler has a sensor fitted but there is no wiring going to it ? Can anyone tell me if this is ok as I was thinking this is the air temp sensor? Thanks for any replies.

HI Eadesy.
That is the turbocharger boost temperature sensor, have a look to see if the wiring plug is dangling down by the oil filter unit, of in that area, also look for two wires just in case the plug as become unattached at sometime and not been replaced, seen it happen before, if so a new plug can be attached. few photo's below.

Thanks for the reply. At the moment I can’t see any wires.
I’ve had a mirror trying to see but not found anything. Now I know it should be connected I’ll keep looking.

Being you have not long purchased the FL1 TD4 I would remove the air ducting/intercooler hoses and check them also clean out the egr and the manifold, when cleaning the manifold remove the MAP sensor from the left side of it, that can be cleaned with some carb cleaner and wiped off, the manifold will need to have some oven cleaner sprayed into to it and jet blasted out, leave to dry then refit, and weekend is best.

EGR can be cleaned out by first scrapping out any gunk, then again sprayed with carb cleaner, wear gloves as the black gunk will get every where, while you have th manifold off you can check for the boost wire/plug.

if the ECU notes that the air-temp. sensor is faulty .. it will use a default reading of -5c
meaning at temps. above that .. the engine will produce more smoke than it should
'cause it 'thinks' that there's denser air at the intake than there actually is ..
it will over-fuel .. causing excessive smoke .. and crap mpg probably

Thanks guys, I’ve removed the manifold (which needs a clean) but can see no trace of a connector / damaged wires for the air temp sensor anywhere at the front of the vehicle. Are there different set ups as I have seen some pics on line of td4’s without a sensor in this position? Just wondering if the pipe had been replaced at some time with one off a different age vehicle?

2005 Freelander Td4 should have the sensor (assuming UK/Euro spec)

Most likely is that engine has been replaced with an earlier version and the engine wiring loom does not have the wiring in for that sensor.

Do you know if the engine has been replaced on that car at all?

Not aware of an engine change but it could have done? I’ll check the engine numbers later. Is there a link on here showing what age the engine numbers relate to?

Ahhhhh so thats what that sensor is . :( I have the sensor plugged in but both wired have snapped off . I see the wires but need to purchase a new plug. Car runs fine. Yes there is some smoke but not excessive. I will order one and replace anyhoo. Good post and another problem solved .

you'll need various bits off there .. including the plug ..

( replaced mine recently .. same reason )

and .. note which orientation the pins are on the old plug ..
before inserting the new pins in new plug ..
