hello all,

Whilst still renovating my 200TDI I’ve added a boomslang headlight harness which has improved the headlights. But there’s a weird issue going on....when the engine and ignition are off I get all lights (side, main, full etc) but when the engine is running all the lights still work except when put on side lights the main headlight relay buzzes like mad. It only happens with the engine running. Could this be linked to the dim dip relay that I’ve been reading about (1990 TD retro fitted with a Disco 200TDI)

Thank you

Get a bulb and two bits of wire, and test all the supplies and earths at the relay itself.

Hi that’s my start state tomorrow. But it’s weird that they all work fine less for when the engine is on and the dip headlight relay buzzes like mad when I switch to side lights only.

Thanks

Maybe something is taking the power away as the engine is running, or maybe engine vibes highlighting a dodgy connector/earth etc.
The earths on older land rovers are notoriously poor.
Where is the boomslang loom getting its main power from?

Thank you for the replies, power is coming direct from the Bty with good earths for each light. Just weird it’s only doing it when the engines running.

Time to recheck earths

Ahh, even though the boomslang harness doesn’t state that and doesn’t have extra earth wires? I’ll try that to see if it fixed the issue.

Thanks

It must be earthed somewhere because it takes power to turn on and off.
It could be thru the existing light circuit, just check all the connections are tight and clean

Many thanks, I’ll run an earth straight from the dodgy relay and work from there. My light switch on the column is slightly dodgy (makes side lights flicker if touched slightly) so this could be the cause. On the diagram earth comes from light switch to relays and ends there. I’ll post back my findings

So earths all good, so I’m thinking Dim Dip relay. Why....lights all work great when engine off. Engine on they work great less for when I just put the side lights on and I’ve noticed that the main bulbs glow very dim whilst relay is going crazy. So....knowing that the oil warming light is somehow linked to the Dim Dip relay. I pulled off the wire and it stopped! If I leave it off, the relay also buzzes when the engine isn’t on, put it back on relay stops buzzing but starts again when engines on....weird anyone know where the dim dip relay is on a 90 TD 1990 reg?

behind the instruments

Thank you James, I’ll be back once I find out the cause. In your expert opinion do you think this could be the cause?

Thanks Turrican, what colour was it? I can only see 2 from the speaker hole - 1 x large yellow for rear window heater and a normal metal one. Think i need to go in deeper!

Remove the binnacle and have a look. Mine was a pink colour. I took photos to show how to disable the relay. I will find them and post them on here.
