When I 1st got mine it just needed a re gas, next time was a relay in the fuse box, next time it was burnt out joints in the fuse box the last time it was an intermittent connection to the passenger blow.
Take your pic are the blend motors doing what they should ?
Are the main fan motors kicking in ?
Have you check the relay ? Fuse box for burning smell ?

So when the button is pressed and the wee red light is on does that mean ac is off?

Yes good old landrover design that light on means a/c off. get ****fick fitter to regas it press the a/c button so light is on they won't charge you cos it won't get cold
