Hi

I have a 1990 90 hard-top and would like to mount the spare wheel on the bonnet... On my bonnet there is a sheet of chequer plating, and i was wondering whether that would be strong enough to carry the spare wheel without having to brace the underside of the bonnet?
also, would it be possible to use a spare wheel mount from the back door and rivet it on to the bonnet? just wondering as it would be nice to cut the cost a bit!

Thanks All

proper spare bonnets have reinforcing underneath.Doubt yours would hack it, sepsically off road

What sort of bracing would you reckon would be sufficient on the underside? i dont really do much off roading with her at the minute, so its only really gonna have to withstand the bumps and knocks of the roads...

Mines got a bit of chequer plate on it and it and has lasted fine for 1000's of km of the worst corrugations. To be honest though 25,000km plus on non tarred roads in Africa in 9 months without a puncture I question the point of the second spare. Buy 5 new BFG's and you're good to go.

Your best answer is to get a pre defender bonnet , i.e. off a 90 or 110 as the later bonnets are weaker , as are all the panels .
The bonnet mountings for spare wheels have been basically two types the circular raised plinth type with two bolts and the square plate with three studs . Either will work on the early type bonnet , the rear door 3 stud type will as well as it is basically the same item but with an added hoop to help with sliding the wheel onto the studs when used vertically . The reinforcing used on the later type bonnet does not help with bonnet splitting at corners but is needed . The bonnet opening requires quite a bit more effort with a spare wheel on it . Visibility is not really a problem . Unless you are vertically challenged and sitting on a bit of a collapsed seat . HTSH
