So, Series 3 109 ex military 1974 Bonnet thereof:

I get the bonnet fasteners, I get the hinges, I get the ties down points for the spare wheel webbing, I even assume that the 4 bolts are what is left over after the removal of the spare wheel mount, but what I can't figure is the copper plate with letter box that is riveted towards the front of the bonnet. Any clues?
o_O

Now found it.. but like spot the ball

does the spare wheel cover this?
Any modifications to the rear of the bonnet

Yeah, never did learn the dark arts required to draw arrows or circles on electronic pics. T'is an age thing....
For those arriving late it is almost directly down from the right hand handle of the sack barra :)

Yes, it looks like the spare would have sat over it.

No other mods that I am aware of.

This is the underside:

May be it was for a padlock?
Chain goes round the tyre & 1 link drops into the hole & the padlock is secured under the bonnet in the dry?

I have a chunk of mountain on my farm covered in gorse, bracken and other scrub. One day my mate was bouncing his way across this ground in his stage one V8 when his spare wheel mounted in the same way came loose, jumped off and rolled off down the slope bouncing over rocks and bashing through scrub.:D We never did find it. Perhaps the military had similar problems and found a way to sort it as per Phill's post above.
