Bolt size on engine undertray?

Tomorrow I will be changing the oil, oil filter and air filter on my 2006 TD4 Freelander.

Can anyone tell me the size of the bolts on the engine undertray?

I want to make sure I have everything at hand before starting the job.

I have just taken mine off so that I could replace the cambelt on me 1.8. The 2 front bolts are not at all easy get to. I found that getting your arm inside the front bumper valance was easier, although it was still awkward. The 4 Phillips screws holding the valance onto the undertray will inevitably be slightly chewed up. I had to slot one with an angle grinder so that it would undo with a standard screwdriver!
 
Need urgent help.

Have started the job and removed the four screws.
Removed the two bolts on the cross member.

But where there should be another four bolts (2 each side) there are only flat metal discs with a small hole in the middle.

I have tried using a torch and looking into the undertray but the other side is too dirty / corroded for me to see what the score is.

Can anyone advise please?

That's what I was thinking, but normally pop rivets are plastic. At least the ones I have only come across are.

If they are pop rivets, what Is the best way of removing them?

Been reading various guides on here and they may be rivets, but not pop rivets.

Looks like I will have to drill them out. I really need to change the oil as I can feel the performance being affected.

I have managed to remove it (not in one piece) by a mixture of drilling and brute force.

I can always get another one if I want and use bolts instead of rivets.

Now I have mislaid the damn allen key to get to the air filter.

It's not my day! :(

have you been undoing the wrong ones people think they should undo the 4 rivets that hold the centre onto the frame when they should not there should be all bolts 2 or somtimes 4 at the front -2 each side then one or 2 where it meets the subfame at a angle then the 2 at the back
 
There were definitely 4 rivets where 4 bolts should have been according to my Haynes manual.

It's all done now.

I may get a replacement undertray, although I have no plans for any serious off road driving.

have to check oil level later and that is that for 3000 miles.

I agree with TW1, have you been trying to undo the wrong ones? I have re-attached my undertray this afternoon! Starting at the back, there are two vertical 10mm bolts; moving forward, there are two horizontal 13mm bolts on each side of the metal frame. These are close together and attach the metal frame at an angle of 45 degrees. There are two 13mm bolts that hold the frame at the front along with several screws that hold the bumper valance to the undertray. There are several rivets that hold the plastic part to the main frame of the undertray! These should not be removed! In the Haynes, on page 1A 6, it shows you the location of the bolts. Are you saying that there bolts are not there and the undertray has been rivetted on? My FL is an 05 model and I can't believe that your car would be that different!

The engine under-tray has nothing to do with off-roading. It serves to keep road-spray and general filth out of the engine-bay.

Without it the engine is noisier and the vehicle is less aerodynamic.

You say that is that for 3000 miles - I only need access to the underside at 12000 mile intervals.

I was under the impression that it was wise to change oil and filter every 3000 miles on a diesel engine????

Is that overkill?

Gross overkill!

Even with non-synthetic that's a bit often.

Any reputable brand of oil will run 12,000 miles these days.

I'm considering the latest OMV BM fully-synthetic which is BMW & M-Benz extended interval approved.

Lots of folks just change their oil once a year or 12K whichever comes first.

Next time something needs doing to that vehicle ,hand it into a mechanic . He should have a good set of spanners and a hammer . ;)
 
LR used to recommend from 12 months/12,000 miles for normal use, to as low as 1 month/1,000 miles for extreme use/conditions for all models.
 
You should not need to drill the pop rivets, the undertray comes off with those intact. You may have FUBARed :eek:
