ERM???? £27 are you sure?

Yes, that's exactly what I said to him. That includes picking it up, same day skim and then bringing it back later that day if not then the following morning. I thought he said £57 quid, but I was quickly corrected with "NO!!! £27". It's all they charge as standard when they've done other heads at the garage I'm working at. I expect there will be VAT on top of that - it's a bit of a strange figure.

FFS pos you're always on here dishing out wisdom about engines and stuff then you come out with that! Can you see now why I had no interest in helping you fit that tdi you were going to buy off me? How long has you'r "quick" conversion been going on now?:D:D

Hey! That's all i've ever done when fitting head gaskets in the past - three now in total. Clean off all the gunk from both surfaces, wrap a large square block be it metal or wood in emory cloth and then run it evenly over both surfaces until it all comes up clean or any raised areas are all true. What's wrong with that!? It's never failed (touch wood) :)

And yeah I can see why you didn't want to help now :D If I'd stuck at it and had all the parts I needed, I reckon I'd have been able to do it in two days, three at most, and that's with a lunch break. I wouldn't like to do it again anytime soon - I just can't be arsed, and there's a lot more involved than I originally thought. That said, the garage where I did it have suggested I help them when they do the same conversion in a few weeks / months time to one of their own 90's. I've been running it for a week now though and I'm really impressed. One week in total it took to do the swap.

Have you sold yours yet?

Aye after being ****ed around by a total ebay idiot had to re list it but it's gone now. Got meself a galvanised chassis for me 110 just needs a few minor mods as it's a td5 one and I'm going to put a 200tdi in it. Was only takin the mick btw you've done well to get it all swapped overand back on the road without to much trouble. It is a lot more work than you'd think till you've done it though isn't it.

ere POS put new head bolts in as well, they are only ment to be used 3 times. this was one of the major cause of my head gasket failures, they are stretch bolts ;)

if you got the head off you can usually check it with a metal ruler/sprit level. Usually only needs skimming if it has run with no oil or no coolant and overheated in the chambers causing it to distort. If I were you I would change the gasket first to see if the problem goes.

Good stuff, I was really keen to come and take it off your hands but I kept working out ways that I could afford to do it and then realising that I had other things I needed to pay for which had to take priority. Then of course one sprung up locally so I just took the plunge and made up the rest of the money by selling my mk2 golf. Generally speaking it was quite a simple job, and there wasn't anything there that was beyond me as so to speak, just time consuming and eventually boring! Luckily I was doing it at a landy specialists so I had access to all the parts I needed and tools and a helping hand if I needed it. It's made a massive difference :D

Will do, I've just been reading about that and I dunno how many times the head has been off in the past. How much do you reckon a set will set me back? I'll have a look on Paddocks in a minute :)

Thats sound advice, and it's exactly what I intend on doing. It doesn't use or drip any oil  and it's been running nice and cool whilst I've been traveling around in it. I'll whip the head off tomorrow, clean it up and then thoroughly examine it. If its damaged, I'll skim it, if it's not, I'll clean it up again (and the block obviously) and get it all whacked back together. The torquing sequence will more than likely be my biggest slip up if I don't get it right. Luckily, I've got three landy mechanics who can give me a hand ;) There's nothing to suggest that the gasket has gone elsewhere. There are no bubbles in the header tank and no build up of excessive pressure and there's no blowing from the dip stick tube or the oil filler cap either. I'll put some pictures up if it's not raining.

Something totally un-related! Why do soo many people put my user name as POS as opposed to pos!? It's short for Postlethwaite, which is my surname, not Point Of Sale! :D;)

Oiiii, I like my name! I cracked on with the job today and I've made good progress. Head off, and I can clearly see where the gasket was leaking so I've cleaned all the surfaces up, and the head's gone for skimming. Just to confirm, it is only £27. That with a company called 'Drakes' over at Bradford. Here are a few naff pics from my mobile:

My landy awaiting major surgery:

The usual gunky oily mess thats left when the remnants of my engines blood and guts ooze out of the head on removal:

Barely any wear in the bores - a little polished but look at the cross hatching! It'll be like new with the skimmed head and new gasket:

The head on a bench in the shop next to another head from some ancient Land Rover petrol - A 2.25 I think:

None of the usual hair line cracks between the injector and glow plug holes either:

So that's that. The head should be coming back tomorrow (hopefully before lunch time - less than 24 hour turn around) so I can get it all back together. The head bolts look fine so I've cleaned them up and I will be reusing them. Other than that, so far so good :)

haha use a corn flakes packet if you wanna be really hard core lol.

The reason I say is i had an electric fan in my 200 conversion and i swear I never ever switched it on they just don't run hot at all. In fact we did a scorpion challenge at tixover without it fitted!!
