Not happy at all

been doing bits and bobs on the 90 to get it ready for the winter, was going to get the glow plugs out, 3 came out fine, no problem at all, got to the 4th one, closer to the bulkhead and it snapped...

what are my options here? burn the fuker?

get one of those bolt extractor sets and shove it in there and turn it?

I have too many things to do mate, bikes, track bikes, etc, etc... so I've started on the 90, doing things bit by bit
Already ripped the heater box out and snorkel and redone everything properly..
still have to waxoyl the chassi, replace steering box drop arm ball joint, new steering damper, weld battery box and new frames for the bucket seats....

spencer, mine was smoking quite a bit starting last winter, the other 3 glow plugs are black!...so if I put 3 new ones and weld this hole up it will be alright?
never heard such thing though....
 
Yes
DI engines dont need glow plugs to start from cold, but IDI engines do.
They are only fitted as an ade to reduce smoke from cold starts.
Some Freelander/rover diesel engines only have 3 glow plugs fitted any way.
Never needed mine this last winter
 
JP, can you not get a small chisel in there an knock it in to the remaining bit of the plug to act as a sort of screw driver as most of the tension will be out of it now its snapped? try some penatratin oil on it an small amount of heat to to try an free it off easier, be better than welding the hole an finding that you do need the 4 to start properly in the cold english winter

of all the freelanders i've seen they all have 4 plugs in them, just that 3 can be changed quick, the 4th needs the injection pump moving to change

oh yeah, i also thought glow plugs where actually used to heat the combustion chamber to temperature for a complete controlled burn? i can see the reasoning for the ade of less smoke on start up, but thats just because the chamber is at the correct temperature for the whole air fuel mix to burn as opposed to only burning half an throwing the rest into the exhaust.... IMO

im gonna try and get it out today, if it doesnt want to come out then I might just weld the hole..

but going to try everything possible first to get it out
 
hahahaha, that would be fun with a round chisel!! lol

well, my plan is

1. chisel in and try turn it with the aid of mole grips andsome heat
2. bolt extractors and some heat
3. weld a rod or bolt and turn with a socket and ratchet

4. burn the whole fekin thing :)

The last 10 years my 300 tdi has not had them wired up.
The reason they are fitted is to ade starting, less smoke from cold .
IDI engines need glow plugs to start, DI engines do not.
Rover diesel engine of a type has only got 3 plugs and thats a fact!
Which year and vehicle Iam not 100%, but thought it was also fitted to freelander at one time.

well....... no fokin luck

Tried the screw driver, the bolt extractor, the welding a bolt to it, giving it heat while trying all the previous options.... no fokin chance, didnt even move a bit..

I reckon whoever has put that glow plug there has cross threaded it and now its stuck... so for not it has a bolt rammed in there and 2 spots of weld..

going to get 3 new glow plugs and see how it goes during the winter, if its bad then I'll drill the plug out and rethread it...
 
I know it's a bit late but look at extract engineering of Carlisle web site he gets them out for £70 + £37 an hour travel or you can travel to him I know it's a bit far but I think he's the only person in uk with the right kit to do the job with out taking the head off
 
Try ringing some engineering firms. We have a firm come out to us and do them in situ, they drill and tap them out and it don,t take them long. they don't charge much either though they do get other work of us too.
