Here we go again.
Always had a strage knock from the back at 30mph, , ythis week it just got worse. Fisrt thought was vcu bearings., but dropped the whole prop and it's still there. Spin the back wheel and theres a grind noise, front right won't spin freely, so I'll strip both for brake prob and then change bearings........just concerned it could be the drive shaft carrier bearings....

even with prop removed the rear knock might be your Front Diff bush chief.
A gear growl/teeth mesh noise is quite normal when spinning rear wheels as its the diff pinion gears you can hear meshing.

Cheers, I changed the front diff bush to cure the famous rear clunk.......or should I say my dad did thinking he was doing me a favour. He managed to do it by undoing all thr diff bushes and then hoiking the diff across with a pry bar.........instead of lowering the sub frame.....and voila clunk gone but then this rotational knock started which would come in at approx 30mph........so my thinking is he's knackered a cv,carrier bearing or less likley a wheel bearing. I've lived with it for a while but now it really needs sorting out.

did he remove the driveshafts before "hoiking" the diff over? If not he might have dislodged the driveshaft c-clip inside the diff....or indeed not got the driveshafts pushed firmly home...thinking aloud.....

No he didint, drivers side has c clip and is all the way home as I had to change the oil seal on that side about a year ago......needs doing again.....probably because the new seal I got was a ****part one.
Passenger side looks ok but i'm going to strip that side and check the bearing, drive shaft etc...

Me hippo's back to being nice and quiet now. I ended up changing both rear diff drive shaft carrier bearings......drivers side was really quite rough and had caused the drive shaft oil seal to start leaking.
I had to open up the diff as one of the needles from the bearing decided to drop in there.......everything inside looks nice with no visible wear.
As a bit of over kill and as everything was stripped down anyway I changed both rear wheel bearings........in the process one of the abs sensor bolts sheared, the sensors are a real tight fit in their housing so it'll not fall out before i get to drill and tap it out next weekend.
All in all quite a straight forwards job, nothing too difficult as long as you have access to some bearing pullers.
