Hi all, I've been into land rovers for over 10yrs now & I really like disco's, as they are comfortable & pretty good offroading.. But here is the problem, I really like the 300tdi's, (the best land rover produced in my opinion), anyways to what I'm getting @, the 300's are just getting to a age now where they are just rot boxes, an all most impossible to find a rust free one.. So my question to u all is how easy is it to fit a D2 (td5) body onto a D1 (300) chassis.. U can all see where I'm going with this, the 300 chassis, engine, box & running gear with a rot free body from a td5.. Now I know that this will a big intense job and that doesn't bother me or put me off the idea.. The thing I wanna know is of all the body mounts do any line up & if so how many?? I have been reading a few forums but some say it's easy & others say impossible.. Has anyone tried it, or knows anyone that has??

It will be a q plate after
The disco 2 is longer

Why????

Seen a ton of "adjusted" land rovers over the years, the term they often use, if they change it at all is "re-bodied land rover".

No "Q" plate, no SVA, unless the chassis has been "modified" but again, that is very much open to debate as to the meaning of modified.

Also, stop with the "Q" plate scare mongering, would rather have a "Q" TBH, it says so much, like the fact that you have knowledge enough to do something to a high standard and pass, a "Q" plate is actually something to be proud of not ashamed of.

Agree NO q plate as its the same chassis. It was just done in LRO mag but the bit I diddnt understand was on the LRO one it said it took loads of electrical work to tell teh TD5 ecu that there was an engine running as the 300tdi only has a stop solinoid and glow plugs - why not scrap all the td5 electrics and just use the 300tdi wiring loom as its not as if you are using any of the fancy TD5 stuff!
Very intrested in this as its my plan to to a TD5 on a 300tdi chassis too. started off being a rebuild but now with 3 kids want a proper seat belt in the back so hence looking at this too.
Iv heard that only two mounts dont line up - guessing its the rear as the crossmember is diffrent and its a tad longer for the forward facing seats.

Q plate lol, you modify a chassis more bobtailing than I would b lol.. I was already planning on just using the 300 wiring loom as the hardest thing to sort would be soldering the wires for windows, doors & lights, that gotta b easier than messing around with the ecu.. Interesting re body mounts tho, I wonder just how much longer the td5 is?? Wonder weather a body lift on I could get away with making some rear spacers or weather it'll look daft & will need bobbing.. Hmmm

I'm planning similar but using a 1973 tax exempt Range Rover chassis ,axles etc with 300 tdi engine r380,planning on using disco 1 wiring loom and dashboard, let the fun begin

I know im guess it has to be the rear ones - however my other problem thought will be the rear seats as it has the proper seat belt will the anchor points be different - fairly easy to make up a strong bracket to the chassis.
I have been looking for dimensions of a D2 chassis to see the difference but cant find anything yet.

What a bizarre idea.. when I had my D2 the TD5 engine and running gear, it's wider track, better stance and EAS rear were the things I liked most about it.. the fact the body & interior smacked of D1 was a disappointment.. guess I'd sooner have a D2 with a D3 bodyshell ha ha.. anyway good luck with the project I hope you end up with the car you wanted.. ;)

Hmm, this thread has jet given me an idea. Bob tailed 300tdi with a D2 body.

Anything to save welding upside down whilst bits of rust fall in my eyes.
