can't see how a bobtail would fail an iva, as long as it's put back together properly. you're only cutting some appendages off.

is gary glitter one of your heroes?

if the documents say range rover and original plate then a Bobtail by its nature is modified heavily and ought at very least have a note on body change with the V5.

What would you change body type to?

Having looked at the regulations in a bit more detail, this phrase sticks out:

Where any alteration is made to a vehicle so as to make any of the particulars set out in the registration document incorrect, the registered keeper shall deliver to the Secretary of State—
(a)notification of the alteration;
(b)except where the registration document is lost, stolen or destroyed, the registration document.

So, if you bobtail it but the actual recorded details on the V5 remain the same (same body style, colour, fuel type, etc etc) then no reregistration, no IVA, no problems at MoT test, etc. As a further example, if you wanted to convert your 4x4 into a 6x4 (or 6x6) by adding another axle, you WOULD need to reregister it (and probably need IVA) because an item (the wheelplan) on the V5 would require changing.

Of course, you'd still need to comply with Construction & Use regs - which is a different subject altogether!!!

exacurly.

I'm not sure it needs reregistering at all - where exactly in the laws, does it say a radically altered vehicle WHICH IS ALREADY REGISTERED, actually needs to go through obtaining a registration plate etc again?

Er here?

Registering a radically altered vehicle : Directgov - Motoring

Registering a radically altered vehicle

Allocating a vehicle registration mark

The vehicle must score eight or more points to retain the original registration mark. If less than eight points are scored or a second-hand or modified chassis or altered monocoque bodyshell is used an Individual Vehicle Approval (IVA), enhanced single vehicle approval (ESVA), single vehicle approval (SVA) or motorcycle single vehicle approval (MSVA) certificate will be required to register the vehicle. A 'Q' prefix registration number will be allocated.

Scoring components

The following values will be allocated to the major components used:
  • chassis or body shell (body and chassis as one unit - monocoque ie direct replacement from the manufacturer) (original or new) = 5 points
  • suspension = 2 points
  • axles = 2 points
  • transmission = 2 points
  • steering assembly = 2 points
  • engine = 1 point
It used to be a grey area because the rules didn't specify that the chassis had to be unmodified. They do now so the situation is black and white.

Bobtail = IVA and Q Plate

That only applies when REGISTERING one though - you don't need to go through that, because its already registered....
