black smoke

My Disco TD5 feels like it down on power and when under load (going up hills etc) it chucks out loads of black smoke (you can hardly see anthing behind the car!). It's got a new air flow meter and turbo hoses. what else could be causing this?

knackered egr valve, blocked air filter, leak on turbo hose, gunked up/holed intercooler.

EGR is blanked, and filter is clean (K&N). Must admit, the turbo whistle does sounds louder than before (but put that down to the k&N)

what about the little pipes that go to the wastgate and the wastgate solenoid

had a look and cant see any splits/holes in those

had a look around the wastegate, gave the arm/lever some oil and some of the power has returned and the black smoke has gone!

I feel it's still down on power tho, as going up the slighest incline requires a lot more rev's.

To test if the wastegate modulator is working properly, is it just a case of rigging the wastegate up like on a defender? (i.e. pipe from intercooler hose straight to wastegate?)

no it needs to stay as it is or the ecu will not no when to ad the extra fuel when the turbo cuts in
