After many years of do I, dont I, I finally took the plunge and joined the Landy community - Still trying to wipe the smile off my face.

I have had a mystery problem (known before purchase) with the 90 Defender I bought for a while - No power and black smoke when the throttle is wide open

So far I have:
Had the IP checked - It was dead so replaced with a calibrated unit
Boost checked - Okay (perhaps slightly too much)
Wastegate checked - Okay
Hoses checked - all open and free flowing. No sign of delamination or collapse
Injection pipes checked - Okay
Injectors checked - Okay

I now have power (could probably get some more, but enough for now) thanks to the replaced IP, but still Black Smoke under hard acceleration.

I have just spent the last 2 hours reading this - and other -forum, but don't think I have found anything that has not been checked.

Anyone got some advise for a frustrated newbie

Black smoke is usually over fueling so first thing I'd check is the air filter.
Then I'd check the rubber turbo hoses for splits and intercooler for leaks, if turbo pressure is being lost through holes and not reaching the cylinders it would give your symptoms.
No doubt other peeps will have more ideas.

An update:

Reconditioned IP
Turbo Boost pressure okay
Turbo has been off and checked - All okay
Hoses clear - we have enough air

Still Black smoke

The inlet manifold has come off - it's clean, all gaskets in the right place
The Injector lines have been checked and injectors replaced - just in case
The Intercooler and related hoses all check out okay.
The exhaust manifold has been off - clear

Guess what - yep Black Smoke

The front of the engine is coming off next - Timing check and reset

What do I do when i find the timing is okay??

LOL - Thanks for those sage words of wisdom.

Guess what..............Nothing wrong with the timing!!
Now investigating if the diaphragm on it vacuum side of the fuel injecion pump has been turned so it gives more fuel than is required.

To be honest - I am at the point of straw clutching

check the small bore pipe from the turbo to the IP diaphragm it's not unheard of for these to melt on the turbo/exhaust and not actuate the diaphragm

Still smoking,.........lots.

Q. If I had 300tdi injectors in a 200tdi engine, what would be the outcome - would it result in a smokey engine?

Frustrated of Burton on trent

Did you just look at it ???? or did you turn it Anti clockwise a few degrees making reference marks as u go ( reduce fueling = less smoke ) ....

Lol

A couple of hours were spent taking the top off, turn a few degrees and the put the top on. Start engine - watch the world dissappear when revved, cough, stop engine and repeat.
Suffice to say nothing, nada, nix, zilch happened to the level of smoke

Perhaps I should say that I can drive it on about third to half throttle without choking too many people.

It is when I plant my foot that I quickly establish a clear road behind me as all other cars dissapear behind a smoke screen - now this is good for James Bond, but not for Joe Bloggs when Plod is looking and asks for you to get an immediate re-test

Well it took a while - and after what amounts to the most expensive service in history, I have sorted it.

In the interests of people being able to problem solve:

Fuel Injection Pump was on it's last legs nd un-rebuildable, so I bought a 2nd hand one and had that rebuilt and calibrated. That gave me power, but even more smoke than I started with.
Turbo was choked with carbon and varnish, so that was cleaned and rebuilt - how expensive!!

Job done - two problems masquerading as one
