Black smoke when accelerating, loss of power and interior fan blowing

Hello all.
First time here for me, so hello to all and thanks in advance for any help/suggestions.
My 2004 Freelander TD4 has recently started to blow black smoke when the revs are above 1800 or so. The kick down is sluggish at the same time, and power is greatly reduced. At the same time as the smoke appears, the interior fan blows harder, whether it is switched on even when it is off.
I've replaced two hoses leading into the intercooler, along with the sensor that sits between the two, (may help you to ID the part, knowing that the two hoses come complete with the sensor in the middle when you order the part here in Tasmania) part number PNH500190. I replacd these as there was some old gaffer tape on the hose which i thought meant had failed at some point, but i can't actually see any holes or slits in the old hose.
Anyway the car still smokes, power is still reduced and the interior fan still blows even when switched off. I've made sure today that the hoses were secured well.
Any other ideas i can try before surrendering to the main dealer and there prices?

Sounds like a boost pipe leak. So check all the rubber boost pipes for splits, especially on bends and at the clips.
The heater fan can't be running, if it's switched off, so I suggest the sound you can hear is a boost leak.

Thanks mate. There is also a brown scum on top of the water in the reservoir, which wasn't there before, and to top things off there's now a crack around the cap so i need a new expansion tank. Any chance all of this is linked?
 
How old is the coolant? Brown scum doesn't sound good. I would flush out the old coolant and refresh. The expansion tanks do develop cracks around the cap, just get a new one, probably not connected to engine issue. Has it been overheating?

The brown scum could be oil getting in to the coolant, check the oil cooler, also when was the PCV filter last changed, as the manifold, EGR, & MAP sensor ever been service ie cleaned, how old is the air filter? oil filter etc.
 
Mine is still getting oil scum on the top of the coolant bottle 5 years and many flussings after the oil cooler was replaced.:eek:
 
Wow thanks for all the advice. As you said it was a tear on one of the intercooler hoses, replace it now and power has returned, black smoke only occurs when revs are above 3000-3500, (which i presume is quite normal for a 14 year old diesel engine). As for the sludge, the coolant was replaced a couple of months ago, i will flush it out and replace soon, but now i'm not too concerned thanks to your advice.
The EGR was filthy, i've given it a bit of a clean (as best as i could while still attached to the engine) so hopefully it will improve more.
