I have seen on this forum that its suggested that some vegetable oil in a full tank of derv can help resolve the black smoke under load issue.

i haven't got a big problem but thought it'd be worth a go.

So should I just whack a few litres in when I fill up today?

You can try but black smoke is over-fuelling or air shortage. Have you tried a new air filter first?
Veg oil will clean out all the crap from your tank and block up your fuel filters so change the fuel filter after 200 to 300 miles and carry a spare.

Oh and black smoke under load and acceleration is normal. Just watch a Porche Cayennne-pepper or VW Toerag accelerate and choke in it's black smoke.

I can second Sean on that :D Not only does it run 'cleaner' you might notice that you get a bit more power out of the old girl. I typically run on 1/3 straight veg oil (SVO - which basically means brand new clean veg oil as opposed to WVO - waste veg oil) and it makes a big difference to the N/A. I've noticed that standard DERV varies from garage to garage and county to county. Always try and opt for Esso or Shell. Morrisons seem to have good fuel, and their diesel is mixed something around 5-10% bio-diesel. BP seems to have weak diesel in my opinion and I can't really say anything for other vendors because I don't really use them. Diesels were originally designed and engineered to run on vegetable oils. That was the sole principle behind Rudolf Diesel's invention of the diesel engine so that it would make for cheap agricultural use. Most injection pumps don't like to run purely on veg-oil however because it's too thick to adequately lubricate the components. A 90% veg-oil, 10% diesel mix is kind of the safety line.

i reckon whoever designed those 3 litre containers that Tesco sell their SVO in has a depender

They're convenient. I nip down to Morrisons, put £35 of diesel in my tank, get my £5 voucher, go into the store and spend it on 3 bottles of veg oil :D Good, relatively affordable running.
