Theres more to consider than I realised.
Also, big tyres are much more difficult to balance, often noisy on the road, and very expensive if one gets written off by a blackthorn through the sidewall or a flint slashing it open.
They are only really worth the hassle for those that want to drive in serious competition or heavy offroading.
Average user will be better off with standard, or a size or two over.
I agree with the comments suggesting a tall narrow tyre,as opposed to wide. For me, they are better suited to usual conditions in Britain, deserts are not the norm here! :)
 
I have 265/75/r16s on mine at the moment at standard height (although looks taller than others). When I change my tyres later in the year I think I am going to go for 285/75/r16 as I reckon they will fit

Don't look as aggressive then though, thats kind of what I am going for! Plus wide would be better in sand (for Morocco expedition). My parents 90 has 235s on the back and they look weird.

I have 30mm spacers and the stop locks wound all the way in, 285s shouldn't need the stop locks should it?

I'm coming in here not having read all the comments. I run mine on 235 x 85 x 16. I think it depends on what sort of rims you have . I have modular which are slightly off set so they do protrude slightly. I wouldn't want to run with spacers as I have read many comments on here where folk say they wear out wheel bearings much quicker. 235x85x16 worked well in the sand on my last Morocco trip. I read somewhere that they were about the best size for sand and give you a good ground clearance. With the modular's I have I was able to reduce my turning circle. I can now get about in tight car parks. If I was doing it again I would go with the same size tyres but not with Modular's. They are about three years old and already rusting. Another thing to bear in mind is narrower tires work better in the snow.

My 90 has 33/12.50/15s fitted.. meaning the overall height is the same as a 285, just incase i have more than 1 flat tyre i wanted to be able to borrow a wheel off another bloke. Meaning 33's are almost identical rolling size wise.

The only difference from 285/65/16s is the thickness. I had to put +2" arches on mine to keep it legal. And i alsp went with a 10j rim for 30mm offset so not to **** with steering.

Any larger than 33's are gonna start needing modifications
 
I used to run 255 100 16s

37 inch tall not very wide.

Not many aesthetic mods however..... Gearing half shafts diffs wheels was alright but went back to 255 85 16
My philosophy if a tyre has a lower profile than 85% it can do one!

They would be good, but probably expensive nowadays, as are the 7.50x16s which were also a good tyre for a landy.

Agree entirely about the profiles, low profile are for girls in hot hatches!
 
I didn't pay alot about £80 each but sold them for nearly £800 on rims.

We're the old xcl pattern 900x16 alright way better than the 7.50 versions that were leather in the wet!! Fun with a Detroit locker and fwh on my 90 in the snow. I did a trial in 2wd in the snow for the heck of it. Sideways through the gates!
