Hello,

My N/A has sprung what seems like quite a big oil leak. The oil is dripping from the front end of the engine around the sump to block gasket area. I've cleaned the area up and there is a little oil coming down from above the sump (not from the timing case) but mainly it looks to be oozing out from the sump gasket. I am aware that I am missing the middle one of the three sump securing bolts along that front edge but would it make enough difference to cause a leak? It's only started recently.

Cheers

Yes, potentially .... ;)

I had same with an Escort years ago .. one sump bolt missing, no worries, just caught it one day on a kerb and that was it, Torrey Canyon all over again. When a gasket goes, that's it, it won't fic and will only get worse unless you do summat to fix it.

Might be worth re-fitting a bolt and hoping. Nip up the two either side of the missing one as well.

Cheers Paul! Well they wouldn't put it there if it wasn't needed would they and there's no point me even trying to nip up an oil soaked gasket on that old thing because it'll blow oil out anywhere it can! I'll get a new gasket and bolt tomorrow, cheers =D

If you have the two bolts either side, and its not there, that will be the low spot, and will have let the gasket move enough to leak now.

You MIGHT get away with a bolt, I would be tempted to drop the sump, stick a new gasket on it 97p and get a new bolt too.

That's the plan, cheers :)
