I pulled the pistons out of my '97 V8 this afternoon with the objective of replacing the rings. Been trying to chase down the cause of some very excessive oil burning. Anyway I'm now in unchartered territory having never stripped the bottom bits of the engine before.
I noticed a couple of the bearings are worn through to the brass colour so I was going to replace them all. Rimmers are showing 3 different types - a standard set and two oversize options. Are the oversize ones for when you have had the crank machined or do I need to get with some measuring?

over size are for reground cranks ie +10 is a bearing to fit a crank thats had 10 thou ground off you need std bearings unless crank is scored ,make sure you keep con rod caps with right rod as are machined together and wont interchange with another, and arent marked (numbered) as std also rods have dimples half way up that face each other when fitted as a pair on each journal

while your at it replace the timing chain and sprockets as they can also wear also the main bearings and thrust washers

fit main bearings too ,locktite nuts and bolts on internal components ,check each one as its fitted that it slides a little side ways on crank showing its good fit

This might be a stupid question but is it possible to replace the main berings with out actually removing the crank? If not - any tips on how to remove the crank given that the engine is still in car and has the gearbox attached.

one brg at a time knock carefuly with screw driver opposite side to anti rotation notch they will spin round and out knock round back in with dowling etc so dont damage it , it should slide round ,rear main squeezes rear seal in place push back in square with screw driver before tightening
