Hi,

Ok just got a big really noisy "clank" when switching from P to D on my 1996 HSE. It happen twice today in the following situation. Car in rather stip slope drop wife and daughter then the freaking noisy "clank" when moving from P to D, then 10 meter later same scenario same Problem. Drop the car to the car park 20 meters later tried DNPR in Highway and L range while parking no problems no noises.

I changed the gearbox oil and filter 1000km ago and the car as 82,000 km

Am I in big trouble? Is it normal or I have a dying GB?

Thanks

check your propshaft joints could be play in them

Do you mean this ? (this stuff) propshasft joints p38 - Google Search

Coz the noise really sounded more like gear stuff than this, but then again I could be wrong. Anyway how do U checks these joints? What should I look for?

Also when the car is cold changing from P to D is sometime hard. I always make sure to pump the break, break hard and pump the small trigger on the GB stick, it seems to help

I also have a scary clunk. Checked the propshafts also with brake drum out ... and it turned out there is an orrendous play in the transfer box output shaft. The chain is also probably tired. Have a look at your shafts and the transfer box.

So how did you solved your problem?

Well, nothing realy brave. I know my limits when it comes to reparing cars. I decided to have the transfer box reconditionned instead of swaping it with another used one. I saved money, purchased new chain, bearings, shafts, seals and other parts, and found a transmission expert willing to do the job with my parts. Booked in for next friday and looking forward :p

In my case the clunck comes form the transfer box and there is play in it. It doesn´t mean you have the same issue. First check u-joints and propshafts for play and try to narrow down where your noise comes from.

Thanks Freemonkey and NicP38 for your help and advise...

This morning I drove 200km from our country house back to our home in Tokyo and had not problem whatsoever. I put the car in Neutral and try to check below trying to see if there is play and nothing, everything seems to be rock solid in a way that there is not weakness and also seems to have been well maintained. Anyway... I found after 2h30 of drive that I have the wet carpet syndrome on my Car after using the AC... So on top of changing the Rear Brake pad, Oil, Engine Belt (Start to make some noise) I will add O Rings to the list and ask them to check this "Clank/Clunk" problem. I called them already and the guy mentioned about "Torque" since it only happened on a slope and not on flat... But he will check this anyway....
