Blimey, you must be nearly as old as I am:) Leased lines in the banking system used to struggle at 1.2K baud in my day. My computer was 18 bit, had 32K of base memory and up to 8 further 32k banks, used to support up to 50 terminals with millisecond response times. All software written in octal notation long hand:D

I think you must be 5ish years before be in the game, I just missed the machines with <1MB main storage, 18 bit and 32K data banks? You must be a PDP or ICL man? I started on IBM 360/370 writing assembler (spoiled I know) on a 4381 with a whopping 4Mb main storage later upgraded to 8Mb. Then we ditched that for a 3090 (32MB central storage swoon!) mind you you wouldn't believe the number of users and applications we supported on that! We still had a few Dec VAX and PDP-11s knocking about which I tried to avoid if I could. The sea of IBM 3350 disk packs took up a quarter of a football pitch for a total site DASD capacity of about 3Gb!

I know Data lives in Frenchland and you is a suvvener but please speak English if at all possible. :p:p:D:D

I'm comfortable with x86/68000/6502 and Ibm 360-390 Assembler, COBOL, REXX, PL/I, C, C++, ADA, Fortran, PERL, SED, AWK, Python, VB and Java (probably loads more I've forgotten I know!) - but English? Nah can't do that! :D

PDP11's? Pshaw!!! PDP8's were good :). Lots of switches to play with ( and bootstrap from) :p

Sod programming a PDP-8 - bloody things! Talking about having to write (machine!) code for everything, didn't even have proper data access routines - you did i/o yourself. PDP-11 now there's more like it, a sensible machine with 68000-like assembler making it easier for non-geniuses like me to code!

<Snip------------------------->

You could also use it for in-car multimedia applications. Raspberry Pi has got to be one of the coolest bits of kit in a generation!

I share your enthusiasm for the Pi. Frustrated by the lead time, I've been messing around with an Arduino Uno. Not the same thing at all but packs a lot in for very little money.

It is going to be interesting to see how this all develops. I do see a problem for high skilled employment in the field as more and more code snippets get posted up and things become less mysterious.

There's another interesting project going on at fritzing.org. This enables you to do your design, prototype it on breadboard, and then it designs the pcb. This really opens up opportunities for specialised applications and designs to become reality at a reasonable cost.

BTW, your tracker concept is probably the most 'mature' potential use of the Pi I've seen so far. I wonder what people will come up with once the sillies of turning on the oven from work have been discarded?

G~

PS - I think Fritzing is a stupid name and if you do watch the tutorial videos, don't have any coffee in your mouth when the lecturer first discusses variables.

This has got a bit silly!
Best get my commodore 64 out of the closet and start playing Blagger!
Lol

Seriously I thought about the mobile phone thing at first! But to be honest it is not the oute I want o go down,
I'm looking for a dedicated unit that can provide dedicated backup and self monitoring.
Riders kit looks good and I will be talking to him about it.

The first computers I worked on were solder programmed, later ones used punch tape, then a half inch thick disc with 11 or so read write heads one per track each track holding one byte.
The 18 bit system was similar to The Data General Nova, I designed quite a bit of it.:) I'm more hardware oriented though I did do some diagnostic software and payroll on the very early machines.

I think I was still in nappies when you started Data! :D

Ok this thread is now boring the pants of me!
It's about trackers! Not what we have done and not done!
For ****, lol. I have saved the lives of human beings in war torn Iraq, I have saved And monitored killer Wales in and around the west coast of Canada.
I have nursed a harbour porpoise back to life whilst stood in the north Atlantic upto my chest in my trousers and jumper in Orkney in mid November whilst it was snowing for 1 hour( that's ****ing cold I can tell you)
I have done things to people that wanted to harm our country that would make you puke!
All with the blessing of the queen and country.
So I do not want to hear about programming obselite computers.
I thank you.
Lol
Buy the way I'm into a lovely bottle of red wine, and I've just started on a bottle of Taliska whisky!
So I do not mean to offend anyone but as my name said, Stopmtalking Bollocks
Lol

Sorry mate but talking bollox is a major part of this forum.... and in this case "talking bollox" is a verb not a name! lol

Ahha
Hang overs
Who needs em?
Rite then, back to sat navs!
Or the Enigma machine at Bletchley park.
Can I get one of those Enigma things mounted on my dash board so I can text our lass whilst driving?
I've invested in a WW2 code breaking book off EBay!
Aparantly it was used in the very popular and biographical Hollywood film U57, so it should be able to convert my text into code and back to bollocks again!

All I need now is 12 thousand miles of twin core coper wire to send the texts on whilst trailing behind the car whilst driving.

Or am I just TALKING BOLLOCKS!
Lol

Actually compared to some of the ideas we get on here that one's pretty sensible:D
